2007 Tyee Kayak Surfing Derby is in the planning works once again . If you missed it last year you'll want to check it out for 2007 as Department of Fisheries here in Canada are projecting the 2007 Chinook returns to be age class 4 & 5 predominently to Moutcha. If this prediction comes through the derby record of 31.5 lb will easily be broken by someone!!!

For 2007 Derby the Resort will be restricting the weekend to kayak fishing only so come on up, take part in our great hospitality and have a great time as we are looking at filling the bay with kayakers.

PS. Finally got a clocking of speed for the surfing part of the derby as one participant was hauled 6 kilometers (the Canadian way) at a gps recorded boat speed of 4.4 miles/hour (the US way). To the gratification of the 2006 derby winner opf 30.9 lbs Chinook, the surfing demon broke off the line.

Still updating the site for the Derby and new kayak fishing packages for 2007 so check back often as I'm hoping to confirm a raffle of a new kayak from one of our promoters for some lucky participant.

OK.  Just so you all know.  I've spoken with Jim and NWKA is officially adopting Moutcha as one of our events this year.  That really doesn't mean much except that I'll be helping out in promoting the event as best I can.  I hope we'll have a solid contingent from NWKA in attendance.  I'm planning on going.  Whe else is?

Got an email from Moutcha Jim that they are already 50% booked for this weekend.  No cabins left so it looks like we are camping.  I'm checking to see what camp spots are left that may support a group of us.  If you want in on a campsite, let me know and I'll see what I can book for us.

Cheers!

Moutcha Jim is holding sites N8 and N9 for us.

Here's a map ... http://www.moutchabay.com/images/Moutchaplan.htm

These spots will accommodate 2 small tents each.  I'm going to go ahead and put a deposit down to reserve them.  I'll be taking 1 tent in one of the sites.  First come, first serve if you want to reserve one of the other test spots.  Just let me know ...

I've switched to campsite F2 and Fishin-T is 2 over.  These are waterfront sites.  I have room for more so let me know.

On another note, Ocean Kayak has stepped up to the plate and will be donating a kayak to this event.  Delta Kayaks is sporting one as well.

Is this the tourney that's in July? If so I guess I need to step up to the plate and get ready huh?
Where can I get all the details for this one?
Thanks.

Zee,

Nope, this is the one that takes place over the labor day weekend each year.  You can go right to the source here:
http://www.moutchabay.com/

I was there myself last year.  It was great.  I only saw one person that didn't catch one (I'll let him tell you that story himself).  Danglin, who you might know from the Norcal board, caught 8 that I saw and a total of 11 that he tells.  It's the best "can't miss" place and time to catch a really good size KING salmon that I know of anywhere.  I'll be going up there from here and so will Polepole, so there'll be rides to be shared for sure.

Start makin' those plans pal.  Last year, there were only about 20 of us competing for prizes, and I thought that they were great prizes.  Moutcha Jim thinks up all kinds of wild catagories to make sure all of the prizes get spread out.  This year the prizes are WAY big (to me any way).  There can't be that many people show up cause Jim's place is only so big, so what are the odds of winning a kayak?

Which brings me to one more fact that I have to relay, if I'm to be honest about the whole thing... "What are the odds?"  Not that good if your name doesn't have the syllable "Lar" somewhere in it.  You've got Carl LARson taking the first years grand prize, LARs Seipman the next year, and then Big Al LARiviere taking first, sencond AND third last year.  And now I'm told that all 3 of these guys plan to be there this year.  I don't know about you, but I'm CERTAIN that this curse CAN be broken and THIS is the year that I aim to do just that!

Hope we see ya there,

Fishin-T

If at first you don't succeed....  maybe skydiving is just not for you.

The wife and I are going! I contacted Jim and he said he's got a spot but if we can get a spot wit Da Boyz that would be even better. Lemme know Pole2.
Thanks.

Oh, and noticed this on the end of the email "I'm just confirming the details for sponsors to the Derby, good news is Ocean Kayak is providing their new Trident SOT as a prize." :o :o :o :o :o

Right on Z.  You can share the spot with me as you're the first to shout out on it.

Greetings.

I am interested in the Derby.  Looks like a lot of fun! Do you know what the status is with camp sites?

I also see that there is a Derby in Sept. 22&23.  Are there other events on the horizon?

I am new to the site and fishing in the area.  I just bought a boat (Prowler 15) and have just finished outfitting it.  Stoked to start fishing.  ;D  Planing to fish around Orcas Island on opening day. No real idea where to target, but it will be fun to get my line wet.

Thank you for providing the forum.

Welcome Espiga!!!

It would be great to see you up at Moutcha.  I'm checking with Moutcha Jim to see how many tents he thinks the sites that we have rented can hold.  If there is room, you're welcome to set up with us.  Otherwise we'll just have to reserve another site up there.  I believe there are still some available.

The Sept 22-23 derby is the only other "formal" event.  That being said, I'm sure there will be more informal gatherings between now and then.  Where are you located?

Hello Allen,

Thank you for the kind reply.  Please let me know what you find regarding camping at Moutcha.  I also have a friend that might be interested.

I live on Camano Island on Elger Bay.  The beautiful glassy calm water, incredible scenery, and the various boats fishing that I see from my house has led me to begin this kayak fishing adventure.

When I started looking into rigging a kayak for fishing, I was stoked to find a whole world for kayak fishing; I had no idea!!!!  I have been out of the fishing world for a few years and now I find this whole new sport!!!

I grew up in Santa Cruz CA, primarily fishing in the ocean for salmon, halibut, lings, rock fish,...similar stuff to what is around here, but not as plentiful it seems.  It will be fun to see how the fishing techniques will be similar and different from what worked before.

Thank you again Allen and everyone else for providing this forum.

-Jesse

Howdy, Espiga! Glad you've joined us! BTW, the area you live in is a good one for Dungeness crabs, and they'll be opening soon. It's also good for blackmouth (immature chinook salmon) in the winter.

It looks like I may be able to hit this contest, too. ;D The family is off on vacation, while I stay home and work, so I'm building some serious WAF. I'll be interested in hearing what Jim has to say; if we need another site, I'd be happy to share. I've got plenty of gear.

I'd also be interested in carpooling, too. The gas (I'm driving over from Eastern WA) and ferry charges will put a substantial crimp in my fishing allowance. ::) I could easily carry a couple yaks on top my Element, and if I bring my trailer, we'd be limited only by my 4 seats. I'm hoping to leave here late the Thurs. before, or early Fri. morning.

Thanks for the kind welcome everybody.

I'm glad to hear that the crabbing is good in the bay here.  I am geared up and ready for Wednesday!  Over the last few days I have seen some commercial guys, which is encouraging.

I also would be very interested in carpooling.  However, if possible I would like to get there a little early..maybe Thursday to allow for one day of fishing to get comfortable with the place.

Cheers!
