I'm going to bring 3 old Penn 209's to Moutcha and rebuild them, perhaps do some work on the ferry ride to kill the time.  These are the reels of my childhood and haven't been used in a long time.  If I remember correctly, they weren't in the best of condition either.  At the very least I'm going to clean them out, lube them up, and replace the drag washers with greased carbon fiber.  I'm going to guess that 1 ends up getting parted out to replace parts on the other 2.

Anyone else want to get some work done on some reels?  I gotta order the drags and can add to the order if you let me know what type of reel you have and what you need.  I can also print out the schematics beforehand and bring them too.  I'll bring some Corrosion-X, Shimano Drag Grease, and some general marine grease, as well as some tools.  I'm no reel expert but I kind of like tinkering.  I think I know my way around the basic Penn's and Abus.  Other reels I'm not so up to date on, but really, how hard could it be?  I think Charles has some decent experience breaking down reels as well.  I'm not saying I'll do your reels for you, but I will look over your shoulder and say "oh shit" every now and then just for the fun of it.   ;D

I am interested in learning more about rebuilding reels.

After you post I realized how badly my reels need attention.  I have purchased the parts that I need, I believe, for my Penn reels: 500 Jigmaster, 113H, 320 GTI (fishdogs actually), and S8500.  I also have a Quantum IR310 that needs some love, but I wasn't able to find the parts I needed.  I found a schematic for it however.

I hope my order will arrive in time to work on some of these before Moutcha, but I would be interested in working on the others while camping.

I have opened up my 500 and 113H and put them back together just to check it out.  The 500 is amazingly easy to work on, can't believe I never serviced it before!  I found the 113H a little more difficult, but still pretty easy.  I look forward to seeing how these reels work after I replace the drag and re-lube everything.  I have not gotten into the spinning reel or the ones with levelwinds.

Allen:  Do you know where to locate parts for my Quantum?  As far as I know, the drag system is the main problem.

I look forward to meeting everyone soon :)
Cheers!

Not sure about Quantum because I don't own any Quantum stuff.

Hmmm ... I got a 113H that needs some love too.  I'll drop that in the box of reels to bring up to Moutcha.  I also have a Abu 5500 that I might as well bring as well.

If you have no problems with the 500 or the 113, you should be fine on the 320.

Great idea, Allen!! :D

I've got 3 Penns, the only problems I've had with them is exploding parts during disassembly!! :o:

209; works, my 'but reel, needs cleaning, grease and new drags

180; I've never used, but I have a rod for it, make a sweet little rockfish jigging reel; also needs cleaning, grease and drags

85; missing some small parts (spring and screws) that I've ordered, plus clean, grease and drags. A spare 'but reel!

Time to review A.T.'s posts on NCKA!

Just made my reservations to and from Van. Island; Friday's was no problem, but returning on Monday was problematic. Ended up reserving a spot from Swartz Bay (Victoria); other wise would have had to be at the Duke Point at 7:45am or 10:45pm! :o :'(

I wouldn't wait any longer!

What time from Swartz Bay?  I'll book the same.

Pisco, do you want me to order any parts for you?  Let me know as I still have to place an order.

If you don't know what Pisco means by "A.T.", he's referring to Alan Tani, master reel rebuilder.  In fact I'm sending my busted TLD15 his way.  I broke it down this weekend and found that the sideplate bearing was frozen causing the pinion gear to wear down against it.  I was going to just order a new pinion gear, but I couldn't get the sideplate bearing out to completely clean it, and I didn't know if anything else was busted.  I do know Alan will be able to fix whatever is wrong with it.

If you are ever looking for a rebuild tutorial, do a google search on Alan Tani and the reel of interest.  You may be surprised what you find.  I searched for "Alan Tani TLD 15" and found a great step by step tutorial.

Drags would be great! My experience ordering those kinds of little parts is that 1-100 costs the same for shipping. I ordered the other parts I need from here- http://store.scottsbt.com/Penn-Parts-Home-Page-W7C1.aspx

I don't think they have the carbon fiber drags.

2:00pm on Monday, from Swartz Bay. I wanted enough time to pack. The drive to Seattle, and then the Methow, will be long, but I have all work week to recover, right? ;)

I've used scottsbt.com (or pennparts.com which re-directs)

HT-100 is the Penn name for carbon fiber.

209 drags ... http://store.scottsbt.com/6-155-Drag-Washer-HT-100-3-Required-P2301C213.aspx

Looks like the 180 drags are the same as the 209... http://store.scottsbt.com/6-155-Drag-Washer-HT-100-3-Required-P10292C208.aspx

85 drags ... http://store.scottsbt.com/6-60-Drag-Washer-HT-100-3-Required-P12379C163.aspx

I'll add these to my order.  I'll probably place mid week if anyone needs anything else.

I often find this table useful ... http://www.smoothdrag.com/guide.html.  Smoothdrag's Carbontex is their carbon fiber drag washers.

So the only Friday slot left from Tsawwassen to Duke Point (Nanaimo) is the 7:45AM.  And I decided to take the 10:15 back on Monday.  Who needs sleep?   ???

Here's what I have reserved.

Tsawwassen- Duke Point,  7:45AM, Aug 31
Duke Point - Tsawwassen, 10:15AM, Sept 3

Pisco,

Holy Cow!  7:45!!  You realize, of course, that this means we need to be rolling away from my house by no later than 4:45?  Hey, I can do it if you can.  So what time are we slated to leave Swartz Bay for Tswassen on Monday?

We might try to hit the road on Thursday night just so we don't have to wake up as early on Friday morning.

Polepole,

So what are you on about?  Are you talking about maybe getting a hotel room just on the Canada side of the border so you can hit Tswassen by 7:15?

ALL derby contestants,

Last year, Moutcha Jim called on a big salmon barbeque / pot luck dinner on Sunday afternoon.  I don't know if that will happen again this year or not, but I plan to be prepared with some kind of thing that I can contribute if he does.  He told us at that time to join in whether we had anything to add or not, but it'd be kinda nice to be able to bring at least something to the table.  If Jim doesn't call it on again this year (I can't imagine he wouldn't) then we can have a little NWKA pot luck maybe.

I also have a Quantum IR310 that needs some love, but I wasn't able to find the parts I needed.  I found a schematic for it however.

...

Do you know where to locate parts for my Quantum?  As far as I know, the drag system is the main problem.

You should check with Mike's Reel Repair.  www.mikesreelrepair.com  They're out of Abbotsford, BC and have a website full of schematics, a forum on reel repair, and lot's of reel parts for sale.  When looking for your parts, you'll want to probably check under Zebco as Quantum is a member of the greater Zebco family.  In the past, I use the schematic to find the part number and then search for the part at Mike's Reel Repair.  I've had pretty good success finding parts for just about everything.

Haven't really thought that far ahead yet, but I was thinking of just crashing in some campground somewhere north.

I'll be bringing some salmon shark up to Moutcha for all to eat.
