So I realize the weather outlook for Friday doesn't look perfect and we're still a little far out. Winds look like they may pick up a bit but aside from that it looks like it may be do-able. So if it's not going to be good for jigging out in deeper water for lings, it might be a nice day at the beach at least.
I'm thinking about trying to be on the water by 7am, try to head outside the rock for a few hours and when the winds pick up, retreat to the shelter of the Cape and either try for some pearch or play around in the surf for a while. Guess I'm just sick of waiting for good weather to show up on my days off.
If the weather starts to look like it wouldn't be worth the drive however, I think I'll just have to wait another week though.
Anyone feel like making tentative plans for a Friday at the coast?

Wish you could be there Thursday morning too.  I'm thinking about an overnight camp and fish Wednesday / Thursday.  Unfortunately work gets in the way for Friday and the weekend.  Good Luck and have a great time -

You beat me to it...I'm hoping to schedule Friday off and hit PC early, before the winds pick up. Let's keep an eye on the forecasts. At this point, I also plan on arriving around 7am.

If the ocean is not safe, how about we try the Sand Lake estuary for crab, and flounder?

You'll have to give me a lot of pointers...or maybe Nehalem for springers?

For flounder, all I have to go on is what I have read on the internet.  I just need to get out there and try it and see what works.  The crabbing could be as easy as dropping rings over the side.  The paddle from the launch to the crabbing hole is maybe 50 feet one way, and at most 200 the other.  I was going to just drop rings and then go search for some flounder up stream.

But if PC is reasonable, I'm game!

The beach launch should not be a problem from what the forecast is saying at this point. The only thing that I'm concerned about is the wind picking up too much. If it gets pretty windy, it seems to me it wouldn't matter if we were at Sand Lake or PC, we would still get blown around. However, I like the idea of being able to hang out in the shelter of the Cape if it gets windy. That would force me to finally take a good try at surf perch I guess.

I'm officially on for Friday. I've got the entire day off. Let's start early, somewhere, and hope the weather holds. If it doesn't, there were a large number of springers that came over the falls last week. Once ODFW updates the fish counts, the Willamette through my neighborhood may be another option for salmon and steelhead, with a float back down through bass territory.

Yakintup, what do you think the swells were at when we ventured out past the rock the last time we went out together?  You know when we couldn't see each other within 50 ft....

I'm just trying to get a idea of what the swells in the forecast are like, compared to that.  I'd say at that point it was pushing my comfort zone.    :embarassed:

The swells that day were about at six feet, maybe a little more. From looking at the forecast for Friday, the swells should not be an issue. This should be a very different landscape from what you and I saw when we were both out at PC last and DPB. You could still get a face full of salt on the way out, but you won't have to be as patient to find a good window. You also won't be buying tickets for a roller coaster ride when you out off the coast.
Our main concern for Friday is going to be wind. Everything I'm looking at is predicting a good amount of wind so should see some good chop by about 11 at the latest. I want to actually be on the water by 7 so I can try to get out to deeper water if the wind permits, so I'll be trying to get to the beach at about 6:30 hopefully. I'll be on ch69 If I don't see you on the beach.

Looks like the tides that day will be heading out to sea about the time you want to launch.  And sometime around 11-1130, we're looking at a good minus tide.   Will this have any impact on the surf zone in either direction?

I don't think so. The surf is looking to be really small, so any change in the surf because of tides will probably be the result of a change in location of the surf zone on the beach. We'll probably see the wind having more of an influence on the surf zone than the tides.

I looked at the PC surf cam at 0530 this morning.   Plenty-O-Light out.  If your interested, we could make a beeline for the coast earlier than what you suggested earlier.  Instead of being on the water at 0700, hows 0530 sound?  I'm not much for stoopid early rising, but if it means I don't have to fight the wind and pay for it later, I'll get up!

Damn, you're killing me. How are you going to the coast? Coming past my house?

Yeah, I don't think I'd be able to leave my pillow that early to make it on the beach by 5!

Maybe I'll shoot for being on the beach at about 6 and go from there. We'll see though, it depends on how I'm feeling the night before I guess.
The wind reports are actually looking a little better now than they were at the beginning of the week so that's helpful. Lemme know what you guys think.
