My apologies NWKA Waterman, I did not mean to appear pushy or sales oriented when I posted my ad for my gaffs for sale. When I read Zee's post and the other members I sent a P.M. to Zee to explain. Here is the post I sent him.  Good Day Zee   not looking for a beating, just trying to help out a few fellow waterman.I designed this gaff in November 2001 and had 250 produced .sold all but a dozen.Sold them for  $190 back then .Came across the few left while moving .Thought a few others could benifit from this design to control the landing of larger adversaries . I had lost the largest halibut of my life when it went into a violent head shake, tossed off my standard gaff and swam away.Sat frustrated for about an hour till I came up with this solution.I will remove my post or abide by your opinion on this matter. Take care fellow Waterman,Riskey Water     Zee suggested that I make my case to the Members.     I live in Ocean Beach ,San Diego and am currently preparing to paddle from the Canadian border to the Mexican border.Starting in mid June. This preparation led me to NWKA site to get a perspective on your territory. The trip will consist of 30+mile per day paddles with 62+travel days and completed within 90 days. Sorry to have offended the members but will keep you up todate on the trip,Riskey Water

Hey no worries bro, we're just funn'n with ya (at least I was).  I doubt I'd ever see a creature big enough to really need a gaff or legally be able to use a gaff on, and this may be true for alot of us up here.  :-\

Now about that paddle you have planned.  Dang you're ambitious!  30 miles a day off the PNW Coast?
I've read several blogs from some experienced sea kayaker's in the area, and it seems like 9-15m is a good day.  What kayak are you planning on paddling?

At least we know you're not just a spammer now!  That's one helluva burly paddle you've got planned, you'll have to keep us posted on it.

RW,

You know ... way back when we first started thinking about butts, the idea of a gaff head with a clip just like you are offering came up.  I'd buy one ... but not at that price.  I thought about buying as big a spring loaded carabiner and and sharpening a point on it.  In the end, I settle for a big old shark hook.

Good luck on your trip.  Keep us posted on the details and let us know where you might be when.  Maybe we can hook up at a campsite or 2 and provide some fresh fish for you after a long day of paddling.

Maybe coordinate re-supply stops (or even on the water if necessary).  Might be a bit ambitious, but it is possible.

Allen,
Do ya think using a short pole spear w/ a detachable tip to shoot one through the head would work? could also rig a float to the spear just in case.

RW -
Keep us posted on your location during your trip. I have an RV site available in Charleston, Ore. for only $30/day!  ;D

Nice choice in 'yak!  I have the Island Adventure as well.  It's a nice one, and I wouldn't trade it for the world, but it is a little troublesome to paddle with the akas/amas in place, unless you can shorten your paddle stroke or go with a greenland approach.  I've only tried a greenland paddle once in mine, and it was nice.  I didn't try it with the full sail rig in place but it might we worth a shot.  If you're looking for a stop in the San Juan's, you might want to research Sucia Island.  It has lots of sheltered beach front and fresh water.

I think a harpoon setup with a float would work just fine.

RW,

If you make a stop at Beverly Beach (Newport, OR) I'll feed ya and you can camp in the yard rather than in the state park down the hill.

Keep us posted on your journey.

Might be neat to have folks come out and add some photos to a collection for the trip...
