Anyone interested in hitting the salt Sunday or Monday? The surf forecast looks decent both days with Sunday AM possibly a bit wet and PM winds picking up each day.

Interest?

My son and I can probably make it up there on Monday morning for a few hours before heading back home to Stanwood, WA.

Forecast for each day is getting better. I'm looking to launch around 6am each day and be off the water by lunch...with limits in hand.  ;D

Any more takers?

PM's to follow.

Are these your regular days off? My work sched is screwy this week, but I'm usually off Sunday and Monday. We should make a concerted effort to link up and get out there!

Yes, these have been my days off for the past 2-3 years. However, in late July I'll be going back to a M-F work week. I really enjoy getting out on Mondays when the rivers are basically devoid of boats but I also miss being able to do things with others on the "normal" weekend days. This will also allow my wife and I to take that comprehensive (Thurs/Sat/Sun) paddle course from Alder Creek!

Since the chinook seasons are being gutted and last years coho didn't want to bite anything I offered, I'm planning on hitting the saltwater regularly this year. I just need to figure out this seasickness thing. I sure do miss being in submarines and being able to dive deeper when the seas get a bit rough. Let's get out there soon!!!

One last bump to tomorrow morning. I'm shooting for a 6am launch, but those that know me  understand that probably means closer to 6:30.

If you get there a bit later, I'll be monitoring VHF 69/16/9.

Jay

gonna get jiggy  ;D

What have you tied, and how bad is it?  I don't get seasick (knock on wood), but after bobbing around in swells for a few hours, it takes me hours and hours to get my land legs back and I've occasionally gotten nauseous after landing!

After feeling ill on Saturday I contacted (steelheadr) Jay to let him know I wasn't going to make it Sunday. I woke up Sunday actually feeling greatly improved, so I loaded up the yak and blasted off to Pacific City. I figured I would run into Jay, or at least one other kayak fisherman out there. Since I loaded everything up after waking up I arrived to the beach at about 8:30am. Wow! there had to have been 50 dory boat trailers along the beach. I parked and launched all the way down the cape side of the beach, at the sign marking the parking boundary for boat launch vehicles. This was actually my first ocean and surf launch experience, so I studied the sets of waves coming in before launch. I ended up with some water splashed on me, but timed passing the spot of the largest wave break in between sets. I was off and on my way out to the big rock, as I had spotted a kayak fisherman out there. Turned out not to be steelheadr, but a nice fella who isn't a NWKA member but had read posts from this thread Friday and Saturday. I fished until about 1:00pm, as I was sensing a slight increase in wave swell size.  I had two black rockfish in my burlap sack, so this was not only my first ocean experience, but also my first fish in the yak. Coming in I did my best and timed the wave break again, but the next one caught up with me and I successfully surfed it in to inches deep water. This was a great first ocean experience! I wish I had more pictures, but I was focusing on things other than the camera for this trip out.

Nice to see you were able to score some fish on your first trip to the salt! Looks like the conditions were great!

;D  WooHoo!  You've got to love the rush.  When she's in the mood, the ocean can make you feel so good!  I'll bet you're hooked now.   ;D

Pictures were taken not long after making it out there. the first picture has the other yaker in it, I think he was on a yellow caper. In looking at these pictures again I can see how much calmer it was early. By the time I left waves were beginning to really ride up against the rock & swell was slowly building. I've spent enough time on small boats in the great lakes to recognize changing conditions & when it's time to head back. As I enjoined a victory beverage at the Pelican I noticed some wind blown breaking waves between land and the rock. It was by no means a storm, but I was glad I had headed in.
Yes, I'm pretty stoked! I felt very at ease and confident bobbing around on the yak, and no seasickness, which is amazing considering the day before. I'm looking forward to the next ocean trip. ;D
