Had a few days free and the wife was rarin' to get on a road trip so we headed out for the Oregon coast... and I had enough WAF to bring the yak and gear! I keep forgetting just how beautiful the OR coast is. Just amazing.

So got out for some rockfishing and had a great time. Tried the regular gear w/ varied success until I broke out the Brush Hawgs (AKA SpotHawgs). Total for the day was 15 rockfish (best 19") 2 cabbies (best 19") 3 lings (best 21.5" :-\) and a greenling at 15" and kept my limit for the day. Excellent work on figuring out that plastic Spot. The conditions were pretty decent on Thurs. but really deteriorated today so built some WAF sightseeing on the way home. Oh, and of course hit up Burgerville on the way home!!! :tongue9:

Too bad you couldn't have squeezed that ling for another 1/2". Nice take home and self pic though.

Thanks SH. All praise to FFTW for the cam mount. Love that rig. So easy to set up, take pics, take down, and stow. Something about me and OR lings. Every time I fish OR I get lings that hit right at 21.5". Although I did have a pretty damn sizable one that broke me off that day. Someday...

Thanks CBY. Do you figure the lings are a bit runty in OR? Seems like the bulk are in that range. Got down to the south end of Cannon Beach. Wanted to just keep on going.. so beautiful!

Nicely done Z-Man!  Those Brushawgs are like rockfish candy.

A strong haul.  I get hungry every time someone posts about the Oregon coast.  Next time I pass a panhandler downtown asking me for food money, I'm going to hand them a Brushawg and a map.

Classic. Except in the salt it's called a SpotHawg. ;)

In general I have found on the Oregon coast, the little lings and the bigger lings don't hang in the same areas. If you are catching wee lings, move.. Go deeper and big structure for lingzilla

No kidding. Really interesting to see the same rockfish species along the North West coast all pretty much having different structure that they hang out depending on location. Thanks for the tip PP.

I like to go for natural colors.

Zee and Spot,

How did you get the Brush Hawgs down to the bottom?  Did you just thread them onto a lead head jig like you would a scampi or minnow?  Or run them off a 3 way?  Or something else?

Zee and Spot,

DC

I just look them straight in the eye and in a hushed but commanding tone say "DOWN!".   :P

Actually, you use them just like any other jig body.  An ounce or two of weight will do ya.  The Brush Hawgs will start to tear after a couple of fish.  When they do, just remove the straight part and thread the jiggly portion back on your jig head.

Pumpkinseed or motoroil tube jigs work well also.  Just slip those over the jig head and push the eye up thru the body before you tie it on.

-Spot-

You run the Brush Hog like any other jig body but the tube jig can be put over the head of the jig.

Sure, sure. You just want to have us all running goofy looking rigs and you'll be sitting on the sideline laughing your butt off. Nice try Spottie.

 ???  :)  :D   ;D  :laughing7:  Oh ye of little faith.
