Hank,
i dont think that minn kota power unit is designed for the salt.(hoping thats what you meant)just fresh water lakes and rivers, etc. i know that minn kota did, or used to, make a salt rated troller, but like you, i do not see how it would survive even one beaching.

As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

WR..... your snicker bars and bowls of cereal isnt any better then the 2 PB&J's or your spoonfulls of frosting out of the containers... lol

How can we have a great day paddling if we have a bad day fishing if we have a motor on our Yak.... i will stick to my paddle and maybe a occasional peddling if i go that route in the future

I'm sure there will be a market for the Torque out there.

BTW, MinnKota does make salt water trolling motors.  As for how to deal with this motor for surf launches and landings... I don't know, I'd have to see how easy it is to pull out/put in on the water.  From the looks of it, it doesn't seem promising.

Let's assume it's a lake/river only craft... then why not just buy a small john boat and a trolling motor.  You can get a brand new 10' john boat weighing 80 lbs for $550 at Bass Pro, add a $200 trolling motor and toss that puppy in the back of your truck and spend the other $1250 on some decent rods and reels.  I think an additional $300 will get you a trailer at Bi-Mart or Harbor Freight.  Heck, you even have room for your dog/wife/buddy and a cooler full of food.

The nice thing about SOT kayaks is that they are actually pretty sea worthy...  I would never take something like a small john boat on the ocean.  I guess you can always completely remove the motor if you wanted to take the torque into the ocean, which is an advantage over the john boat. I guess the kayak + trolling motor might also have a longer range and a better top speed than a john boat?

I actually think that it is a great idea for someone with limited paddling experience to be able to keep up on a trip with those that are more experienced.

Practice and water-time-served also work well for this.

funny, I just had the same conversation on this topic with someone else.

Apparently you have never gone paddling w/ Zee and his mirage-"warp"-drive  ;)

I still see this as a way to get to and from the prime areas that aren't necessarily close to agreeable launch spots, covering a great deal of water on larger lakes, and trolling effectively.  I would consider one as a second or third 'yak, but I love my Prowler and look forward to paddling and fishing from it for years to come.

The automobile came first, then came the pickup truck, sports car, minivan, etc...  Why would our growing sport be any different.

Well, if we're talking "boats" then it doesn't matter, but we're talking kayaks. Is there a difference between a motorcycle and a bicycle? I for one am not ready to put kayaks and power boats in the same category. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of kayaking. After all a kayak with a motor is just a smaller PB. At that point it doesn't really need to be a kayak, it could be anything that floats.

I can understand if you were physically disabled, but then I'm not sure what you would be doing in a kayak anyway, you'd be better off in a power boat.

If you aren't physically disabled and you think you need a motor to get further faster, try hitting the gym and utilizing proper technique, or buy a power boat.

so people with physical disabilities shouldn't kayak?, i'm sure revoroy would disagree, and probably stay on the water longer and definetely outfish you...

and i guess we shouldn't have heroes on the water either...
See ya on the water..

Dude, you are always triyng to make me look like an a** hole.

I didn't say people with disabilities shouldn't kayak, I said they would be better off in a power boat. Which in reality is true. I would say 99 out of 100 times that would be the safest most reasonable call. Each individual is different, but if I were making the call and we were going out on the ocean and you weren't some kind of bad ass, I'd put you in a PB over a kayak, just a safer call.

Dude I've been outfished and outmanned by a quadraplegic, and there are several local paraplegic whitewater boaters that definately outkayak me. You're not hurting my feelings by saying that.

People will do whatever they want to do, disability or not, and there are always exceptions. But stop trying to turn my words around to make me look bad. I do it just fine on my own.

OK Zee. It's going to come down to me and you racing I think. We should do a flat water and a rough water race....That way you can win the flat water sprint, and I'll take the rough water sprint :)What is your top speed on the Hobie anyway? Do you think the mirage drive loses it's nitch when you arebouncing up and down on waves? Seems like those flippers would come out of the water every time you crest and you would lose steam....Just wondering, don't want to piss anyone else off today.

What did you get a sneak peak at the new Ocean Kayak "Cleatus"?  Here's a picture of it from the R&D lab in Alabama.
