Would love to do it. I think mutual appreciation would abound. Top speed is somewhere around 7 mph. I've gone faster but I think there was some current. You know my hull doesn't really bounce through waves but more slashes through them. It's kinds of a plus and a minus. You can keep your speed going but in surf it's kind of a minus because when you punch right through waves you take them to the chest. Not a big problem if you know the ocean. But if you're a newb can be scary. Still looking for that perfect hull.

Now that's a water craft I can support. Reminds me of growing up in Texas. My first paddle experience was paddling a broken down dock section across the Colorado River with a 2x4 in 3rd grade.

Is that 7mph sustained? for how long. I've come close to 8mph in my explorer, but can only hold it for a couple hundred yards....I might have to train a little for this one :embarassed:

must be because of a lack of rocker or lack of upsweep/volume in the bow??? I've never seen a hobie in action, but the native pedal drive I've seen do 12mph on flat water. Not sure if I could take the native.

I'm about the same but can probably push it a quarter mile if I had to. While the top speed is nice I think the better benefit is the overall range you get from the MD. I've pedaled for 20 miles and still had gas in the tank. I really want to try and find just how far I can go but fishing always takes precedence.

Zee ... I think you go faster.  I can sprint at 7 mph on a P15, yeah like 100 yards.  And I'm pretty sure I have while trying to keep up with you.  And you are still pulling away.

I couldn't do 7mph in a T15.....Of course I never tried because I'm affraid I'll have a heart attack. I think max theororetical speed in an explorer is 12mph....i've never come close to that.

I haven't done top speed in my revolution yet but I can tell you it is slightly slower than zee's top speed...But the other day when it was getting dark and I was about 2 miles from the launch I averaged about 3.5 knots back according to my gps...also had about a .1-.2 knot current against me (not huge)...I was tired at the end but I could have kept going(i'm out of shape though)

Like Zee said it's nice to be able to cover miles with minimal effort

But on the topic of the thread I'm not sure I could go with the trolling motor idea...not because I necessarily think its a terrible idea...i'm sure it has it's place...but I bought a kayak so that I could at least get some kind of workout from a hobby...and so far I think its working pretty good...not to mention I can go in virtually any water I want...

All the guys at my work laughed when I told them I was buying a kayak to go fishing on...They said why don't you just buy a used boat...but lets face it you put at least 3 hours into a boat if you want to take it out for the day...not to mention a 100 or so in gas...and lets not get started on maintenance....the actual time you put into the boat vs. the actual time you use the boat doesn't really make a lot of sense when you put it on paper...and that's not even taking into account cost or storage

As to when a kayak becomes something other than a kayak...when i tell most people that I have a kayak you sit on top of and you can pedal they say that's not really a kayak then...thats usually when i ask them the definition of a kayak and what is it if it isn't a kayak...and why is it marketed as a kayak

People at my work thought I was weird as well.  When I told them I build my own Kayaks they thought I was even weirder.  By the way I have a PB.  Its been sitting next to my house without moving since I moved to Portland 6 years ago.  It was a hole in the water I threw money into.  I much prefer the kayak.  I asked myself, "Why register something that you put in the water, put gas in and drive a mile,or in some cases, like OC shad fishing, less than 100 yards, to fish with?"  Anyone want it??  If i could give it away and keep the trailer I would.  The trailer could be used for all my kayaks and canoe. :)

A can of PBR and 10 minutes got me to the bulkhead idea. How many tens of thousands of dollars did they spend on R&D to come up with this new junk?

Yay!  PBR!  Whenever I'm not feeling like a beer snob, or just feel like swilling bear piss, I go for a case of PBR....

I clocked my lazy fat butt (and my Outback) doing a whopping 5.5mph last night on the Willamette going upstream.  Took it through some powerboat wakes and the wake from the Portland Spirit, and yeah, doesn't loose much steam but the water coming over the bow was pretty neat.

must be because of a lack of rocker or lack of upsweep/volume in the bow??? I've never seen a hobie in action, but the native pedal drive I've seen do 12mph on flat water. Not sure if I could take the native.
