As I was wandering through REI the other day, I picked up a Camano paddle. OMG, that thing felt like a feather. And then I looked at the price.  :o  Wow, I imagine you get what you pay for. Does anyone know if they have an outlet or warehouse sale at any time during the year?  That would be worth a drive up to WA.

Thanks,
Jay

Stay away from the carbon paddles Jay.. they will spoil you.

I paddled for three years with symmetrical plastic coated aluminum paddle (it must have weighed 60 oz) and thought everything was fine.  Then for about a year I had a cheap asymmetrical fiberglass paddle that weighed about 35 oz and thought I was in heaven.  These days I have a way too expensive bent shaft, carbon, Lendal paddle that I think would float off my kayak if I didn't have it leashed.

In the end, I think that the fiberglass paddles give you the best bang for your buck (light weight and durable), but yeah the carbon is nice.

I think I have a carbon Camano from the paddle demo earlier this year that's for sale. I'll look in my basement tonight.

Too bad it's a 220. I did searches for werner and camano and it didn't come up either time.

edit...silly me, I was looking in sporting goods, not boats  ???

You'll never want to try a Werner then lol I have a CF straight Lendal and with blades it weighs about 30% more than the full CF Camano does.  I have 2 friends that use a Camano, 1 with a Skagit, and 1 with a Kalliste.  The Kalliste being the lightest at 23.5 oz. I regret every day that I bought the Lendal lol.  But only because I've held the Werners.  The CC Camano is about 28oz(25oz for the CF) while my lendal is in the 35-36oz category (Nordkapp CC blades 225cm CF straight shaft and 20 cm extension because lendal doesn't make a 240).

My first thought was you know what it'll just make me a stronger paddler but after 2 months and approx 100 miles of paddling I'm gonna hit up REI for a Camano.  My biggest complaint and it's my fault because I didn't do the research is that I had to buy the extension on the Lendal.  225cm was just too short and 230 is the longest thing they make when I really needed a 240.

But ya moral of the story don't ever test a paddle out of your price range and you should be very happy with what you get.  I'm finding werners seem to be the favs.  Also get  your REI membership and buy the paddle on your 20% off member sale.

Yeah, the Lendal's are not light for a carbon fiber paddle, but the Lendals are 4 piece.  Werner is pushing lightweight to the extremes.  I'd love to pick up an Ikelos, but why do I need yet another paddle?

That Nordkapp is a relatively heavy paddle.  They don't have CF blades, at least not any more.

Do you really need a 240 cm?  IMO, a longer paddle length or oversized blades (which I believe the Nordkapps have, Lendal regular sized blades are large sized compared to others) have a larger effect than a slightly heavier paddle.

Ya it's a Carbon Composite Blade I'm pretty rough on my gear and wasn't sure I wanted full CF.  I have a tendency of over thinking some things and underestimating others. But ya the 240 was necessary for me.  I ran with it at 225 for a while but i was having clearance issues. I've played with the Kinetik 650 blades and they still seemed heavy to me and more strain inducing than a werner.  I tossed around the idea of new blades but at $250-$275 a pair it's cheaper to buy a Camano and call it good.  Then I atleast have a full spare.

anyone in the PDX area have a 230 Camano I can test drive some time? I'm going to sell some of my excess gear to help finance a dry suit, waterproof camera and lightweight paddle.

My buddy lives in OC but his is a 240.  You could always "rent" one from REI ;-) with their costco like return policy.   I just picked up a Canon D10 WP/SP/DP digital camera love it phenomenal camera and Wp to 10 meters ~$300. The boss is testing the Fuji WP (that goes for about $170) on his John Day trip this week.  We did a ton of research on them if you have any questions.
