JimT, Here's a nice solution to what you're talking about. Having the yak in the back of the truck.

That's a nice support.  I've thought about something similar that has a roller on it.
However, the problem I'm actually concerned with is how long of a kayak I can legally haul in the bed of my truck.  I just did a little research on the law in Oregon and here's what I came up with:  This link     http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/MCT/docs/size_weight.pdf    has the statute on page 16 for what we are dealing with.  It states "A solo vehicle may have up to 3/4 of it's wheelbase as rear overhang" (ORS 818.080).  My full size regular cab pickup has a wheelbase of just under 11'.  This means I can have 98" of overhang behind the center of the rear axle.  I measured this out and then measured from the front of the bed to this point behind the truck.  That figure came out to 12' 8", which is the overall length of kayak that I can legally haul.  So it looks like the Outback is the longest I could legally haul.  I wasn't really interested in the Outback, but since the hull redesign for 2007 (I'm 5' 8" and 170 lbs) it may be worth demo.  It actually may be the best of the bunch for crabbing and salmon fishing out of in the lower Columbia.  I'll try to get up to Scappoose Bay Kayaking in the next week to demo one.
