has been for many months. Only closed to sport boats for a short time (I think)
We are open year round for inside the jetty's and estuaries in Or. ;)
However, the water level in the local river is now low enough they journey up into the Harbor with the rising tide. I can now throw traps off the bank as well. ;D

I'm dropping traps this afternoon or tomorrow morning.  Depends on whether I finish the FF install and the afternoon winds.  I'd love to know how deep the water is before I drop a trap over the side, but I'm dropping by tomorrow noon with or without a working FF.  Plan to pick up Saturday morning.

"WAF"?  "Wife Acceptance Factor"?   Clearly SWMBO.

Yeah, make sure you know how deep it is and have plenty of extra line & weight so that the tide change doesn't take your traps away. WAF= Wife Approval Factor

You guys got it really good in OR.

Yeah I suppose..
Rockfish, lingcod and dungies all year.
We can use gaffs on lingcod and rockfish in the ocean.
That's pretty good.

But then again we have a $5 per kayak per year fee coming up. ;)

Actually, if it wasn't for WA and OR sharing the jurisdiction on the Columbia salmon stocks I'm sure OR would have let the gill netters run the stocks into extinction by now.

has anyone ever tried crab snares?  i saw these at Cabella's and they were cheap ($4) and nice and small and easy to transport on a 'yak.  seemed like a good solution for a tiny boat but i don't know how effective they really are.

Don't know of anyone using them. Although traps can be a little intimidating on a yak at first they aren't that bad once you get used to them. Look at the back of ChuckE's yak and you can see his custom trap rack. Plus they hold a good amount of crab when they're full..

How deep did you go and long did you let them steep?  I'm thinking a maximum of 100', preferably 80', and between 12 and 24 hours.

What are the regulations (if any) on marking your floats?

I have a scheme in mind for a temporary FF mount involving a strapped to the rod pod upside down milk crate, tie-wraps, and FF.  Battery in small dry bag held in the closed sonar shield, and transducer where it belongs in the scupper.

I'm most likely going out to tend the traps around 5-6. Come on out and I'll show you.

Before you do any crabbing go to the shellfish section of the regs book and read thoroughly.

From where are you launching?

27th Ave NW. It's a tiny street so you have to park a bit out of the way across the train tracks. Also don't want to piss off the residents there. It's a good launch. It's a bit of carrying the kayak on your shoulder to get to the beach but doesn't close at sunset like the park does.

Those crab snares work pretty good but you don't have to order them from cabelas you can get them at almost any local bait shop for the same price.  I have never used one off a kayak but you would need anchor to do it.  I don't know the rules in WA but in OR we can use three traps so I usually dump two rings then go to shore and cast out the snare to help pass the time.  They are really fun you can see the crabs "biting" on the end of the rod then set the hook and real them in.

ah, i see.  i was under the impression that you would set them like a normal crab pot with a buoy and such.  i didn't know you used a fishing rod.  makes a little more sense i guess.  Cabella's is just about 40 mins from my house and i have a 'yak cart to take back there anyway.  it doesn't come close to fitting mine so maybe i'll grab one while i'm there and give it a whirl.  thanks for the info!

Ran into Zee on the water last night while dropping a couple crab traps.  He had some VERY helpful advice for a newbie.  Thanks, Zee!  And, Zee had my NWKA safety flag.  Nice flag.

Thanks for the tips.
