Port Orford, which is an hour south of us here in Coos is also a good place to launch, normally a fairly calm beach launch. Nice structure

I've done the south cove at  Cape Arago one time and it was hell! Awesome fishing though, if i was a little younger and not gimpy i would be hitting it hard!! Need a super light paddler and i might think about it again but not with the Outback. Usually this would be an alternate to Sunset if it's too rough, but on a calm day it would be minutes to Simpsons reef from there.

Blacks taste real good, especially bleed out properly. Of course not as good as Ling or Cabbie.

So Roy, just how far (and difficult) is a run from Sunset to Simpson Reef (on a calm day)? Also, I've seen you mention Baltimore Rock a number of times, so I looked it up on the map. What's the depth like around there, and how long does it take to peddle, assuming the conditions are right?

Baltimore rock doesn't take long at all maybe 20 minutes on a straight pedaddle out to it, but i usually fish my way out there. it's a pinnacle that goes from 70-80 feet up to 20-15 feet, the current can be swift, nice being able to peddle to counteract it. It is also pretty sticky(jigs get hung up) because of the current and structure.

I haven't made it down to Simpsons Reef yet but it's on the list for sure. Lots of shark bait(seals, sea lions) down that way... :-\ . I say it would take 45 minutes to get there. I've seen some monster fish at the cleaning stations froim boats returning from Simpsons...
See ya on the water..

Is it 45 minutes straight offshore? About how many miles. I've gotta make it down there sometime. That sounds like an adventure!!

Nope, just 45 minutes south right onshore, maybe a mile and a half?, against the current.

But i've heard of a spot that is a couple miles straight out from Simpsons.. Can you say 27-28 inch Fat Cabbies!! I've seen 'em, even showed the guy how to filet them. You come down, you know you got a place to stay and i'll go out on the adventure with ya...

Right on! We need to get a posse out for that. I'll have some time free in late September. Anyone else interested?

Yes, I've caught some monster fish there (Simpson Reef) myself, on the charter boats, and a friend of mine's boat. And yes, I keep thinking about the "shark bait" aspect of it myself. Here I am, getting ready to purchase a new Hobie Kayak for the purpose (mostly) of bottomfishing, and all I keep seeing on cable, is one shark documentary after another! LOL... It's really got me thinking, even though I know the chances are very small for ever getting attacked. I do feel a lot safer about the thought of 4 or 5 of us going out there (safety in numbers I guess), but it's probably a false sense of security.

The good news, is that I have been doing a lot of research into this whole shark thing, and fatalities are very rare for GW attacks on the Pacific Coast, with only 5 Kayak attacks in 109 years, and only one Kayak fatality (a woman down in southern Cali)

As far as the jigs getting hung up a lot out ther at Baltimore Rock, I'll be happy to show you a setup that a friend of mine showed me, that will allow you to to get hung up a LOT less, using those same big white Mogambo Grubs. I've been able to fish off the rocks, and right through the kelp, with this method. And I lose hardly any gear, compared to how much I used to lose.

I am still working on my (and my friends) trailer, but I will be purchasing a Revo, or an Outback very soon. I'd love to get together with you and the other Roy, maybe for dinner at my favorite restaurant (Tai's Dynasty). My friend and I eat there all the time, and would love to meet up with you guys, to talk. It would be totally awesome to start going out bottomfishing, as a group, on a regular basis. It would definitely be a plus to have some vets like yourself, to help me and my friend get out feet wet (no pun intended).

Consider my friend and I, part of your Posse! We should have our new yaks, and be broken in by then. We are both bottomfishing vets, but we are not yak vets. But we'll be set by then.  :)

Hey Bill, sounds good. You ever eat at the chinese buffet in Pony Village? Love that place , can do some serious grinding for 10 bucks. Haven't been to tai's dynasty in a while could do that too.

When you guys getting your yaks? You can go out with us anytime, we got quite a group down here growing all the time. we've had up to ten guys on the water at the same time but usually 4-5 guys is the norm.

Look forward to learning your tricks for not getting hung up and i will show you some good spots to concentrate your fishing efforts.

PM me your phone number and i'll get ahold of RoyG and we can set up a time to get some grub and tell some fishing tales..
See ya on the water..
Roy

I sure would like to shoot for joining you all on the late September trip would stay in motel. Just bot the Revo and have had it out twice so far and need to get more seasoned on it. Kayaking is new to me.  Lovvvvvve this Revo, added the sailing rudder and turbo fins, it is plenty stable, scoots, and turns great. Have not done surf, will have my paddeling lessons soon. No cutten or drillen yet. Researching and thinken through all the add on's. This forum is a great resource!
