Hey everyone! I'm new to the board, somewhat new to the PNW and eager to catch my first fish on the Rogue and looking for a few tips, pointers and fishing partners. I have decent amount of experience ocean fishing for halibut and rockfish but never done much river or ocean fishing off the yak up in these waters.

They are slaying the chinook in the Rogue bay right now but the powerboats are in there thick with about 100 boats out on the water at times.   I'm not feeling to comfortable with the thought of being the only yak on the water and hooking a 30+ pound fish so close to the boats. the breakers and in a strong current.   Tips?   Anyone want to show me the ropes?   How about some good launching spots in the Gold beach area.   Thanks.

is a dangerous place for a Yak fisherman at this time. The Smokers are way too thick, and all watching behind them >:(
A better fishery for you and the Yak is the Springer Run ....not so crowded, and you can fish them more liesurly in upper waters away from all that loud traffic.

How is the Shady Cove area of the Rogue?  I'm suppose to be headed there end of the week with family, we rented some house in that area.  Anyone know about this area?

How is the Shady Cove area of the Rogue?

Anyone?  Trying to figure out if hauling the yacks down there is a wasted effort, or if I'm really going to regret it if I don't...

Thanks

never been to Shady Cove, but it looks to be right on the Rogue in a fairly lazy stretch of river....I would for sure pak the Yak.
it's worth the extra gas, even if you don't use them once you arrive. I would hate to get there and find a "Yak heaven" and not have me Yak. ;)

I've never done the kayak thing on the rogue but I tryed to find some guys here to go with me this past winter--to no avail.  I had intended on going this summer but now I'm over in Brookings to get away from the heat.  I've been down the upper stretch from the Lost Creek damn to Shady Cove many times on a raft and I think yakin that stretch would be a blast.  My understanding is that there is some great steelhead fishing going on right now too.  Just understand that there are stretches of fast water where you'ld have to be pretty good not to get dunked in a SOT.  Be ready.  Have your business secured and don't even think about not wearing a good life jacket.  I wish I was there to go with you.  (that's a lie-it's a lot nicer here on the coast)

The river was swift on that stretch near shady cove (maybe 4-5 mph??), didn't end up putting in, I think it would have been a blast to float, and maybe hit holes down along the way, but I didn't have time to research put ins and take out spots, and couldn 't get anyone in my group willing to taxi for me.  There was an endless stream of inflatable kayaks and rafts, I think I might check out this area again sans-family. I tried fishing from the bank in vain, I was plunking it took 5 oz to hold with the flow there, also tried some drfit fishing without much luck just bites, and lost a couple fights but no landings...

Ended up checking out Lost Creek reservoir.  There were a lot of dish but they were down DEEP, 140'+ on average.  I tried jigging a bit, and let out a crazy amount of line and weight and attempted to troll that deep with no luck.  Didn't fish hard at all, too many in our group were waiting on me so only had a couple hours to mess around at the lake in the yak.

Stopped back at a park on the way back to the rental on a spot that had some calm sections, decided I'd teach my little cousin how to fish (she's 10)  got 9 trout total (kept 4), it was about 50/50 native to clipped, no luck with any steelhead.  Her excitement and determination made the trip worth it, wish I could have caught some out of my yak but had a good time none the less...
