After three weekends of soccer tournaments, I remembered that I used to do something called kayak fishing.  So I dusted off the Hobie and put in at George Rogers Park this afternoon.  I had a feeling about a spot that might hold some smallies.  I'm no EObasser as they say, so I was pleased to catch three in a couple of hours and each one I caught was bigger than the last.  It feels good to upgrade some of my teeny tiny AOTY fishies to a more respectable level.

well done! Most all of my bass fishing last year was at Rodgers (was a very convenient place to fish before i had to go to work). Haven't touched it this year though, except for sturgeon.

Since I could not join the pink fiesta today, I thought I'd at least go back for some more Willamette smallmouth.  Those bass are just a little addicting.

I hit the water at 6 am and had not even a nibble for two hours.  Then the bite turned on and for 30 minutes I boated 5 out of 7 - a couple were just over 15.  I ran out of Senkos or I would have caught more.

Still some summer left so if anyone wants to join me one evening at George Rogers, just holla'

I'd be down for some bass'n with ya.   Thurs or Friday next week good for you?

Where is this area you are fishing?  I don't get to east side very often, so I'm not familiar with the location you rattled off.

Great.  Let's shoot for Thursday after work.  I can be probably be on the water by 5, which gives us a good 3 hours of fishing.  Or slightly earlier depending on your schedules.  Fishing grounds are very close to the launch so we all don't have to arrive at the same time.  Let me know what works for you all.

Mapquest George Rogers park in Lake Oswego, OR and you'll find it.  If you are coming from the north on 43, you can't turn left into the park so take the left right before and it will feed you in.  Park next to the old smelter which is under renovation.  Stop by the bathrooms on the left and head down the old boat ramp to the launch.

I've had luck with 5" Yamasenkos in dark colors.  But others catch bass there on plugs and spinners too.  I'm wide open to learning more about bassin.

PM me when your plans are confirmed and I'll send you my cell # in case you have any questions.

Anyone else care to join?  Wally?  B?  EObasser?  Bueller?

It's an old boat ramp so the slope is mellow enough.  With wheels its a piece of cake.  Without wheels, you'd need a hand from one of us.  Access is great with either a concrete boat ramp launch or sand if you like.  Although the river is so low right now, the water's right down to the very end of the old ramp.

Oh yeah - watch for some rocks just under the surface about 40 feet out from the launch.  The low water has created some dangers where usually there is plenty of depth.  The good news is the rocks are full of bass.

There's a bit of a drop ;D

Funny story (at least in retrospect)
I launched in OC at Clackamette Park and had a leisurely float down to George Rodgers. It was my first time there and I had my wife pick me up. Easy landing on the beach and then a war getting the loaded Hobie BigA up the stairs. Didn't notice the boat ramp and road down to the water until the next time I was out there. ::) I think the road from the park to the water is generally closed though.

Wish I could join you guys, but its a bit of a drive (30 hours).

BTW: Cedar Oak ramp (a couple of miles south (?) ) is a very easy launch and has produced some good smallies for me.

I have Thurs off as well.
As we get closer to Thurs and get a good make on the weather, I'll have a better idea as to what time I'll be there launching.  Evening bassing sounds good to me, though.

Oh, and don't go asking me for any secret bass fishing tips.  I can still count on one hand how many bass I've caught in my life.  :embarassed:

Hehe, I *might* need both hands to count the number of bass i've caught in my life. maybe...

I have never looked at the top of the ramp to see if you could back down, but I'd imagine you could.  I'll swing by some time and see if its accessible. Otherwise we'll want help carrying yaks down the stairs.  Once at the bottom, its all sand.

The rocks are a good place to fish for bass, and where I have caught my only Lake O area bass (on a Silver Fox to boot!).  I've got a ton of senkos and other similar plastics, but have yet to find a bass on any of them.  This'll be a good opportunity for me to learn.

There's no backing down the ramp.  Its gated and locked.  But its an easy walk down the ramp with wheels or with an extra hand.  Stay left toward the bathrooms and you can't miss it.  Looking forward to Thursday.  With some of you having the day off, I'll just have to bug out a little earlier.
