as always - thanks for the input -

we went out with her yak as is and it seemed to work ok - no one was catching fish -so not sure how effective the flush mount troll is per se

however - a bit of research and i'm ordering one fo these http://www.kayakfishingsupplies.com/servlet/the-136/Scotty-Gimbal-Mount-253/Detail

my girlfriend liked having the rod in back of her and she won't be going out without me - so, i think the gimbal mount is a good solution - may bet one for myself too

Check out Zee's Downrigger articles off the home page.  In retrospect it seems obvious, but check out how his rod holder is set up to place the rod cross boat.  Solved some problems for me.

ha - yeah, the gimble mount works pretty well - my scotty rod holder fits right in - and the rod angle is perfect - i fished with it the other day out of my yak and i didnt even have to strain to see it - i actually like this better so far then the forward mounted rod holder, which as it turns out i replaced with my fish finder :)

one final note on the gimble mounts - in my girlfriends OK - the fit is too  loose, so we took a piece of pipe insulation and wrapped it, put it in the whole and it works perfectly
