I was thinking about heading up near Sekiu this weekend to do some salmon fishing.  This will be my first time kayaking in that area and was wondering if anyone had any advice on places to launch and fish.  I was also looking into the Pillar Point area.....any suggestions?  I'm still somewhat new to kayaking and have only done it in the sound.  Are the conditions a lot different up there than in the sound?  I just wanted to play it safe and ask a few questions before heading up there....thanks for any advice!

I'm not familiar with that particular area but the Strait is a lot different than the sound. Conditions can be a lot more treacherous. Check weather and water conditions before you go out.

Haven't fished Pillar Point since I was a teenager, but I caught my first King there way back in '64, fishing with my uncle and cousins in a 16' skiff. It was a fat 22#er. Also got a 7# coho that day.
It should be a great place to launch a yak and try for salmon, though. Fish outside the Point, along the edge of any rips you might find. That's what we did way back when. There's some Black Rockfish in the kelp beds, too.
I have never fished for salmon out of Sekiu, though, so can't help you there.

Some general advice for the Strait: Watch out for fog and keep your weather radio tuned. If you have a gps, use it. Avoid higher wind days. Maybe rig a radar reflector in case some fog moves in while you're out there. Fish early in the morning, if possible, and always on a tide change.

Good luck, and have fun. Wish I could join you, but I don't have a SOT yet, and I don't really want to take my Native 12 out into potentially gnarly conditions. I need to get a gps, too. I'll be up on the N side of the O.P. next week.

(I usually stay local and fish in the estuaries and rivers in the Twin Harbors area).

Thanks for the advice guys.  So, do you guys feel that a 10' Prodigy Perception wouldn't be enough boat for those conditions up there....if it was relatively calm?  I'm definately not going if there are any high winds.   I was planning on staying pretty close to shore and not venturing off too far into the Straits.......  If this is a dumb idea please tell me and I'll stick with the sound until I get a more capable yak.  Thanks!

Was up there for my 1st time last weekend but not in my Kayak.  We put in at Olson's and the fishing was great.  If you've not been there, here are a few observations...basically the same as previous posters.

Fog can roll in fast.  They lost a rental boat out there last weekend until the marina owner found them based on their depth  (they had a VHF and Depth finder but no compass or gps...go figure)

Wind can kick up a mess in no time and currents can drag you into the shipping lanes

There were a TON of boats out there.  I counted just over 100 on the horizon.  Many run fast and furious and are not expecting a Kayak

There was good fishing w/in 1/4 mile of shore.  We made a direct course to the "green can" just off the point.  You could fish that area and be close to shore.

lodging or even camping can be hard to find...when the fishing is this hot

The best fishhing close to shore is at dawn...but fog can be present.

Good luck

Hey guys. Just fished Sekiu last weekend. Great time, lots of fish. The only bummer was they closed kings a full week ahead of time. Fished out of my 15' Alumaweld skiff w/ a deep six, flasher and herring about 3-4 mi. out in around 200 ft. of water. On the 1st day we landed 6 kings in the boat that we would of been able to keep the day before (8-18lb size).

On the bright side we landed our fare share of silvers and humpies, got some good pics and had great time.

Good Luck.
