Who has fished bouy 10 from a kayak before? I'm thinking of heading there Sunday.

Specificaly wondering about the boat ramp from the park. Is it reasonable to launch from the boat ramp at Ft. Canby St. Park and slide out the backside of jetty A between sand island? I'm actually looking at fishing right off of jetty A

Is it ridiculous with PB's or doable. I'm ok with 20 or 30 PB's, but 600 kind of takes the fun out of it.

I've kayaked in there plenty, but not during bouy 10 opener, and I haven't fished it from a yak yet, so just looking for those "don't do that/go there" tips.

I believe this is Jetty A at Fort Canby State Park.    It is legal to launch from the WA side and fish with an OR fishing license.

If fishing or more accurately catching is your goal there are a number of spots much more productive then that area.  If you want to fish the Washington side, do a little sniffing regarding the "Church hole".

Ft. Canby/Cape Dissapointment state park. Jetty A is the smaller jetty East of Waikiki beach....100 yards west of sand island in baker bay, inside the north and south jetty. There is a boat launch just NNE of jetty A and sand island in the park. Looks like the shortest paddle to buoy 10 from a non surf launch area. The West side of jetty A can get hit with swell from outside, I'm looking at creaping south down the back of jetty A, and fishing just East of bouy 10.

I checked and you can launch from either state in this area with either a wa or oregon license. doesn't matter.

Yes, that is Jetty A and sand island. My intel tells me right off of jetty A and float the flood back towards chinook.

I found the church hole, but I don't want to paddle my SOT piggy that far. Where do you launch to hit the church hole. I'm not partial to any side, just one that close to a campground with a good launch spot. The church hole is 6-7 miles one way from the chinook boat launch.

I'm not doing 20 miles round trip in 15-20kt winds in a 14 ft. SOT pig!

I hear that spot picks up a little later in the season, but you think it would be more productive than going further west?

In a yak I would stay well clear of the actual Bouy 10 location.  Heavy tidal exchange and tons of boats, plus it will be much harder to fish from a yak successfully there than other spots.  I would check out the fisheries farther upriver in the estuary.  I will be down fishing in the next few days and always do well on the incoming, within sight of astoria.  I'll just say: plug cut, on the bottom, paddling with the tide and leave it at that.

Park along the Highway and pack the yak to the water and paddle out. Turns 6-7 miles into about a 1/4 mile ;) There are fish there now. 8)

I'm ok with heavy action. kinda enjoy it. So where do you launch to fish church hole from a kayak?

Suppose i could cross from Astoria, but that's kind of a chore too.

I'm trying to cram in surf/sea kayaking and kayak fishing all into 2 days. I like surfing around the jetty areas inside & out, I'm ok with tidal action and current at the bar and mouth. I'm no stranger to PB's Hoping to not waiste all my time driving from camp to 500 different spots.

So, i think i'm going to fish between the S tip of jetty A and sand island, and be closer to surf and camp.

I've been looking on ifish.net, and weekdays are reporting only 10-15 boats at buoy 10. That's nothing.

Ok that sounds a bit more reasonable. I will give church hole a try. I've been wanting to paddle down the backside of jetty A...the end of the jetty just seems fishy to me. 40-60ft deep on the edge of a ginormous eddy.

Perhaps I'll try both. Thanks for the info.

Will you be out Sun/Mon?

You can even see the sweet clean & green waves coming strait into jetty A from the map bsteves posted. That can be a great surf spot. It would be awesome to boat a nooky at the end of the jetty, then paddle around the corner and spend the rest of the day surfing.

A guy can dream right?
