Salmon was a bust. We did see a few nice coho rolling around, but they were few and far between. Didn't even mark any on the FF. LOTS of bait in the water. Just everywhere. Nothing chasing it other than seals and birds. SG and I switched over to bottom fishing set-ups in an attempt at picking up a few flounder, while em7b5 did a little exploring up the shoreline. First we tried rootbeer with gold fleck curlytailed jigs covered in herring smellyjelly, but no good there. Then SG pulled out some gulp squid. They were about 5" long, so we cut them down to make the ugliest jigs I have ever seen. I have used saltwater gulp before with amazing results, so I figured it would be worth a shot. I immediate pulled the first flat fish of the day. Then I hung about a 1.5 lb sculpin (and now the interesting), an octopus, and a sea anemone. SG will have to post the pics. Strangest two living things I have ever caught on rod and reel. At first I had to look at the anemone for a minuet to figure out what it was. It was retracted into a little ball, so I was dumbfounded at first glance. The octopus was a fighter though. I had to put on a glove to keep him from biting little pieces out of my hand while I was trying to free him. Then he inked all over my wetsuit and was off in a flash. It is only fitting that the ugliest jig I have ever fished produced the oddest variety of sea life. The total fish count by the end of the day was 2 flounder, 1 sculpin, 1 SRC em7b5 caught on the fly, 1 Octopus, and 1 anemone.

and to top the day off for me was all the seals and the big sea lion playing around us.

Sounds like emb7b5 had the ticket flyfishing. A searun cutt is always a welcome sight on the end of my line. :D
That's gotta be the smallest octopus I have ever seen. Cute little bugger. Those things are pretty smart for mollusks. I'll bet it learned something from its experience. Probably won't bite on "gulp squid" again, LOL. Yeah, right! That stuff is engineered to be addicting, just like snack foods for us marketing guinea pigs. Although I have caught rocks, sculpins and flounders while stripping flies in shallow water, I get more of that stuff when jigging on the bottom. I guess that's why I like bottom fishing so much. You never know what you're gonna dredge up.
Sounds like a fun day.
