Does anyone have experience with these? I'm buying a second yak late spring, and I'm working out the logistics of hauling my 36" Fish 'N' Dive and most likely a 33" Stealth 14 on top of my Forester. It seems like I could squeeze them both in since there is a single attachment point at the bottom of the cradle. I would just have to mount them at the outer most edge of the cross-members so that the boats overhang the roof a bit.

Any advice, or other options?

I like the vertical stacker style. On some cars you can get three yaks up there. http://www.yakima.com/racks/kayak-rack/product/8004036/kayak-stacker.asp

When my second yak comes around I've been thinking about going with the J-Cradle design like the HullRaisers. one pair on each side of my wifes Saab

I was originally thinking of the stackers like Zee mentioned, but after seeing that they suggest putting both kayaks on one side of the bar, I opted against it.  I think it'd be easier to get to the kayaks from either side of the car, not just one...

Hey need help....I tried to share something with the group by highlighting a web address in my tool bar then pasting it in the post reply box but it did not appear to be active (blue) and when I click on it it dose not do anything?
I also tried to attach a photo but when I previewed it the photo did not show up?
Will the link work and the photo show up after it is actually posted?
One more thing... (sorry for being so inadequate with posting)  How can I change my user name and add a pic of myself?

Thanks for your help!

Chuck

I've thought about the stackers as well. How well do the boats ride like that? It seems like an awkward position to haul two big yaks. Do you have any experience with them?

TN, I tried using a J style with the Fish 'N' Dive, but the 36" hull was too wide to haul it safely. My boat actually fell out of the rack on my way out one morning. Luckily I was only rolling 30 mph and my straps kept it off the street. You might want to double check that your hull is compatible with a J style rack.

This is just my experience. I am sure some of what I will say isn't true for some and their kayaks but that is why I say "My experience".

I have used three different style of carriers over the years (stackers, hull raisers, and the saddle/hully roller combo) and now prefer just tying the yak down to my padded yak crossbar. The stackers never really felt secure plus putting the rounded edge of my boat on a round bar never seemed to be a great fit for me. As I remember my Wilderness system ride was wider than the hull raiser and the shape of my hull never seemed to fit well. The saddlles and hully rollers seem to work pretty well but after a couple years of using that set up I just decided to try without anything other than some pads. I've been using that going on two years now and have been very happy with the configuration. Don't have to worry about any of the attachments getting stolen either.

Padded crossbars do very well, but they don't allow for two kayaks when you only have 48" bars...

My problem exactly.
Right now I just cover my crossbars with pipe insulation, flip the yak upside down, and strap it on.

TXPaddler, You say you didn't like the stackers with round bars, and a wide boat. What about on factory oval bars with pipe insulation? Do you think this would make much of a difference?

Web addresses should automatically get highlighted.  If you can post an example, I can help debug.  Also pics that are attached don't show in the preview.  They don't show up until you post it.

You can change your name and your avatar by following the "PROFILE" tab in the menu bar.  Let me know if you need any more help.

Actually it's one of the best positions to store your yak. Yaks are stronger on their side. If you put down some good cushy padding you can fit a lot of yaks on your car. If it is just one then flat and upside down is all good. As always a lot of cush will keep the yaks secure.

Similar story here.  I've use stackers and saddles in the past.  Now I just use upside down on a crossbar (unpadded for me).  Simplicity at it's best.

Good to know. That would also save me a few $$ by not having to buy two cradles.

Thanks Z

When it's just my yak, it's upside down with no padding. When I add my wifes yak, hers gets mounted on a J-rack. Those J-racks aren't tall enough for the Big Game to feel stable...IMHO
