To saddle or not to saddle, that is the question ...  >:D

I have the Thule 883, Glide and Set and am very happy with it.  One pair of pads is "slick" and one pair is "sticky".  I have the slick pair at the back of the truck's rack.  I can lift the bow up onto the pipe insulation padded rack between the slick Thule pads then slide the kayak forward onto the sticky pads.  Makes loading my T13 a one man task with no need to lift the entire weight of the boat.  Just protect the stern skeg from dragging.

Unless one set of the 881 pads are slick, when you load you may want to cover one set of pads with a couple shop rags to enable sliding the boat.

I use the glide and set but don't ever slide them because I've got yakima bars, and the saddles just roll over and defeat the purpose of sliding.

In the summer I run a Thule stacker with pipe insulation on the bars so I can carry 6 boats.

I went and picked up the 881's the price looked good the pads are like new and the straps were never used.
I do have a question. What is the best way of tying down the bow and stern while loaded on the pads, would a bungee suffice or would a ratchit be a better option?

Thanks demonick for the tip I give that a try when I pickup my OK T-13 I will be ordering it from OutdoorPlay
http://www.outdoorplay.com/store/Product.asp?DID=379&PDID=1&SKU=BSO_OKT13A_DIS

I also picked up the New Icon M36 at West Marine there is a 40.00 dollar rebate going on till 12/3q/09

Do you guys think I should grab the 5 year store warranty I think it was about 30.00?

Well Kayak Fishing is starting to look more like a reality then a dream!! ;D

I'd just use some cheap nylon rope. make sure you tie it to a hook or something under the car, not a plastic bumper etc. keep the tension taught but not tight. you can bend a boat over the rack on a hot day if it's too tight. make sure you run the bowline through rope on the boat, not bungee.

bow and stern lines aren't really there to stabilize or hold the boat. They are there to let you know when it's time to pull over and tighten the cam straps around your rack bars and boat. When the bowline starts swinging across your windshield, you know you need to fix something.

Also-use cam straps around the bar, inside of the tower, then over the boat, and around the bar and inside of the other tower on front and back. you'll be good to go.

wouldn't use bungee.

The kayak outfitters have these cam straps, and I went with two 15 footers for my OK Trident 13, but you can pick up 12 foot straps at a local Ace Hardware which should do the job.

They also have these rope-cinching cleats and hooks (for lack of a better term) for your bow and stern line.
The ones I got are cheap plastic but rated for 150lbs - and come in pairs.  Maybe about 5 or 6 bucks a set.  1/4 inch nylon rope seems to do the trick for me.

I got cammed lines with the Thule 883.  Clearly they are not really for securement, though they may slow the boat from sliding.  What Nanook said.  I'd suggest you get a ratchet or cam line as they are nearly instantaneous to attach and release.
