Yes, I'm a bit on the late side of things, I know. PelagicPaddler and I hit up Pacific City on Friday of this past week with hopes of plenty of rockfish and big lings. It seems like only the rockfish showed up though with the exception of a few lings smaller than what we were looking for caught by pelagic. There were lots of very small rockfish that were caught. The surf was the interesting part of the day. It was a challenging launch for sure and it was pretty lumpy once we were out past the rock. Aside from the swells, it was a pretty nice day.

Great day on the water.. Hope the ocean gives up a few more as winter gets here.  It was "big" in the morning.  Did my first PC "on the way out" wipe out. Mistimed a wave by 1/2 a boat length and got it handed to me.   More than a Huli, backwards end over end qualifies as a wipe out in my book ::).  Took a good shot to the top of my head. I ended up with a mild concussion at Tillamook General later that evening, wife made me go after I tossed my cookies after dinner :(). During the day I thought my scopace sea sick meds had failed me and that was why I was nauseous, turns out a nice rap to the head will do that too :o. All better now ;D

The rockfish came in two sizes: tiny (this years crop?) and huge!  Turned back half dozen or so legal lings in the 22-26 inch range, (trying hard to stick to my 28" or better rule) lost two nice "keepers" in the kelp >:( (went home ling less)

Nicely done guys!  Looks like a lot of fun.

Glad you're still with us Pelagic!  A thump on the head is nothing to take lightly, especially when you're in the impact zone.

Honestly, neither did I.. Just a good solid bonk on the head, hurt for awhile, but not enough to keep me from fishin ;D   Have two dents/cuts that match the width of the top edge of the deck of my fish and dive, just in front of middle hatch ::)

YnUP:
That's a very cool POV mount for your camera. Looks like y'all had a great day on the water (well, at least you did  :-\ ) You made that launch and landing look good.
That grunt and then that grinning look over your shoulder announced that PP was in huli hell (that was not very nice) But next time try to reach up and turn the camera around to catch the carnage >:D ;D

PP: Man! It sounds like you got your bell rung LOUD, then really manned up afterward and went on to seize the day (especially with the lumpy conditions after you got out). But Jeez, that really goes to show that sometimes maybe you shouldn't :dontknow:

Really glad your ok though (?)

I recognize that break line that took PP out.  That's the area that I huli'd in for the first time coming back in.

Looks like a nice day - good camera angle.

It was plenty safe once through the break.   A mix of things came together to make it tricky getting out (at least for me ;D).  The tide was out, swells were much bigger than predicted and close together, which was causing waves to break on the outside sandbar in rapid succession in about waist deep water.  I just didn't get the pivot point of my boat over the crest of the wave in time before it started breaking and got pushed straight back.  As the wave started to spill the back of my yak dug in, I was paddling like mad and leaning way forward, trying to stay straight to the wave face, but I pitch poled over backward.  I got pushed to the bottom and didn't have time to cover my head when the wave pushed the yak down on top of me.  Only lost my bottle of water.  Not necessarily unsafe conditions just bad timing on my part.  Yaknitup was less than 1/2 a boat length ahead of me on the same wave and had no problems..

DUDE- stern squirts are awesome! (when you land them and don't get bonked.) If you can stick the bow in the water and the stern in the air, reach down with the paddle and do a big sweep.....it's called a pirouhette (sp?) sweet way to turn the boat from heading toward the beach to heading back out to sea in 1/2 second!

Going vert in a yak has gotta be one of the coolest looking things to watch (from the beach). It can be fun when you expect it.

Sounds like you did all you could in terms of boat handling, but when I said "maybe you shouldn't", I wasn't talking about not going out because of the ocean conditions. I was talking about not going out because of your condition after the sand sandwich.

Paddling back out, fishing the whole day, coming in and driving home all with a concussion good enough to have you hurling after dinner sounds kinda scary. :o  I also know that when your out there, sometimes its hard to tell if that's your bell ringing or just the sound of the waves. Again, I'm glad your good!

Man, if you can pull that off with a 12' SOT loaded for fishing, then you are THE man!
Heck, I'd pay to see that (and I don't pay for much ;) )

Yaknitup, looks like it's time to get a few more cameras going all at the same time.  You get some really cool shots with one camera, imagine 3 or 4?   :o

PP, that sux you got bonked, that would have sent me shopping for a helmet on the way home.  I'm actually still considering a launch/return helmet as I am not looking forward to bonking any time soon.  :-\

I always wear a helmet in/out of the surf zone. only takes one good whap to yer noodle to make that decision.

I like WRSI or shred ready helmets. they're relatively cheap (<$90) and last through multiple impacts.
