Just a reminder about regs..

WAUNA POWERLINES (RM 40) UPSTREAM TO BONNEVILLE DAM (including all adjacent Washington tributaries and the Willamette River downstream of Willamette Falls including the Multnomah Channel)

    * Closed to retention of sturgeon seven days per week from August 1 – September 30, 2009.

    * Open for retention of white sturgeon three days per week, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from Oct. 1 – Dec. 31 (or until harvest guideline of approximately 11,300 fish is met).  Legal size for retention is 38-54 inches FORK LENGTH (see measurement technique (pdf)).

    * Catch and release fishing is allowed during periods closed to retention, unless otherwise indicated.

Wednesdays are open for catch and release only!  If you're looking for AOTY points, a Wed fish won't count.  If you're looking for some fun catch and release action, well, good luck!

OK, no road trips for me for c&r.  Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays until Dec. 31 sounds great. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm thinking 80lb leader. Anyone see any disadvantage to a leader that big for sturgeon?

Besides NOT being able to brake off if I need to?

Sturgeon are NOT leader shy. I use 65# and I know guys that run 120# dacron.  If bait is tied right, you're not going to snag the hook, so that is pretty much a non-issue.  The reel I've been using is spooled with 50# braid, I run a 18" length of 20# mono then the 65# braid leader.  I use a 14 or 17# mono dropper for the lead, which is the most likely to snag.

I'm good for the week after next too.

I might make it with the boys so they can battle it out for the AOTY kids division if I can't get their mom to take them that day.

Coastal river levels for Saturday are supposed to be perfect for Chinook drifting!

I remember those days. I worked T-Sat for the past 2+ years and only just went back to M-F. I basically have a fishing weekend ahead of me so I'm getting out somewhere.

I used to say that too but after a bit a research, I found that given their migratory patterns, just about any sturgeon you catch anwhere might be fairly fresh from the Portland Harbor.  And, they're really yummy!!!!

I have confirmation of kid coverage so I'm a no go for Sturgeon on Saturday.
