At home alone today, so I decided to play with the tying tools. In the process, I may have discovered a purpose for my daughter's useless dog.

Recipe:
 1. me left to my own devices
 2. one 13lb worthless ball of hair
 3. a borrowed vice
 4. #6 hook, chatreuse thread, two strips of flashabu, four strands of olive floro hair, two stick on eyes, and some heavy head cement

Yes, for years while the Brittany Spaniel was alive the hair resource was plentiful in white and orangeish. Had lots of fun catching cuts C&R in the salt with the BS Flies.  Just bumped into some left over hair last week and remember this great dog with mighty fond memories.  Great to start early Ravdot.

Definitely no shortage of hair on this one. She sheds enough in a week to tie commercially.

Love it! It's cheap, it's easy for you to find, and it's environmentally friendly too... I always feel a little guilty knowing I used dead deer, dead chickens, dead rabbits and a few dead elk just to catch fish that I usually let go. The WAF of you keeping the dog brushed now can't hurt either.........

The dog needs a few friends. Your white dog, plus olive-brown, lime green, and hot pink colored dogs would really make for a nice pack!

Hey! Nobody said "nice fly!" yet!  That is one really good looking tie, there, Ravdakot!
Seriously effective looking.
That dog hair, with its translucent sheen, looks like it might be a good substitute for Polar Bear, which is illegal to import into the USA anymore. Because of its translucence, Polar Bear is among the best of natural white hairs for tying hair wings on streamers, I'm told.
What breed is that dog?

Nice fly, Rav.  Looks like you've discovered one of the benefits of being a tyer....tying flies with what you want and how you want.  Keep up the great work!   :)

Thanks guys. She is a Mini American Eskimo. I'm pretty sure her scientific name is Yappiness Worthnotamuch. Her only redeeming qualities are how much she loves my kid, and now supplying fly material. My wife has been threatening to dye her hot pink for months now. If she makes good on this I'll definitely trim a few more hairs. I could always add dye to what I trim.

Imagine Flytyer_396's humpy fly (the one that worked so well at Brown's Point last summer) tied with dyed pink dog hair!

One of my favorite sea-run flies is tied with olive-brown over white Temple Dog hair that I bought at Puget Sound Flyshop. It's one of the best polar bear substitutes I've found. I'm about 90% sure that a Temple Dog is really a Shi-tzu.

But really, don't you guys think that any fly made from dog hair would sorta have to work best for chum salmon?????
