As of last Thursday.

"In August, 2009 the BC Geographical Names Office approved a resolution recommending the Geographical Names Board of Canada adopt the name contingent on approval by the United States Board on Geographic Names.[2][3] The name was endorsed by the Washington State Board on Geographic Names in late October, 2009.[4] The United States Board on Geographic Names approved the name on November 12, 2009.[5]

With all the issues in the world, someone thought this was the highest priority.  Good grief, a triumph for political correctness.  I think this means that all new maps/charts will bear the new name, Salish Sea.

To be just a little more accurate, the Puget Sound is still the Puget Sound.  It's just a part of a newly invented entity named the Salish Sea.

I like it. Goes with the proper name of the area where I live, "The Republic of Cascadia!"  ;D
Folks, we don't need the rest of the country as much as they need us! Lets break away!  :brave:

I too like the term Salish Sea.

It could be much worse. The late Harvey Manning, in his guidebook "Walks and Hikes on Puget Sound," claimed that Puget Sound was really just the water south of the Tacoma Narrows. He referred to everything north of the Tacoma Narrows as "The Whulge."

I'm not so sure:

"official name for the complex of inland waterways stretching from Tumwater, Washington at the south end of Puget Sound to Desolation Sound at the northern end of the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, and also including the Strait of Juan de Fuca."

I interpret that as all inland water west and south of Vancouver Island.

That's right.  But Elliot Bay is still Elliot Bay, Port Susan is still Port Susan, etc.  They've just been "incorporated" into a new invented body (of course it's actually only the new name that's been invented) that's larger than any of it's parts.  Salish Sea is the collection of all of those parts you named, including the unretouched Puget Sound.  The new body is a "complex" made up of all of these smaller bodies of water.

I stand corrected.  Insofar as Wiki can be trusted, a careful reading of the entry finds:

"The proposed name change affects all those waters currently defined as Puget Sound, the Strait of Georgia, and waters adjoining them such as Hood Canal and Bellingham Bay, plus the Strait of Juan de Fuca which connects the maze of waterways of the Georgia-Puget Basin to the Pacific Ocean.[1] Webber's original proposal for the renaming ended at the geographic division between the Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth/Makah peoples, halfway out the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but the proposals as approved or recommended extend the full length of the Strait, the formal limit of which is a line from the Cape Flattery light near Neah Bay to the Port San Juan light near Port Renfrew. All current names will remain, with the name Salish Sea as an overlay combining them, rather than replacing them as had been the original proposal."

And this:
"... the result of Webber's efforts to promote the term, the adoption of which, he says, will raise consciousness about taking care of the region's waters and ecosystems."

I wonder if this will raise the consciousness of British Columbia enough for them to stop dumping Victoria's raw, untreated sewage in the Salish Sea?

We're getting there--the devil of course is in the details--where are the treatment plants going to go, who's paying and how much etc. etc. etc. At least the process is moving forward. I personally have my s*&% together(septic field).

This all sounds like a bunch of BS to me! Just another layer of Federal Oversite. I suppose 'you know who' will have to appoint a Czar for this too! Will there be an additional federal tax if you live within 100 miles of the Salish Sea? We have to pay for it some how! Maybe Madam Speaker can fly her 757 out her to hold a rod in the air to officially rename it.

that must be her new 757 broomstick..her old one was made in europe by seimens, so it was confiscated in the name of patriotism

there wasn't any reason at all to do this except in the name of politics...total waste of our congressional budgets..

As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

My understanding had nothing to do with where her 'broomstick' was made, but that she thought it beneath her to have to stop and refuel on her weekly trip home and then back to DC. Such a waste!

:confused2: :confused2: :confused2: Sure, and watch out for the black helicopters, while you're looking for the 757. ::) ;D

Me thinks your knickers are in a bunch, and you're swinging at the wrong target.

"Salish Sea" has nothing to do with "Federal Oversite" or Pelosi, except that the feds have to approve the legal creation of the name. All the driving force for the name originates from here in the NW, for 2 reasons.
  • 1) Because the entire area functions as an ecological entity, thus making sense to have one name identifying it.
  • 2) It's culturally more authentic than names like "Puget" or "Juan de Fuca". Those are European, non-native names, while "Salish" is the name of the language group that most of the natives that lived on it's shores, used.

30 seconds, and Google, can help you find the (inconvenient?) facts.
