Hauling 4 kayaks (when the whole family crew comes along) and loading them on top of my Dodge truck is killing me.  Is anyone using a trailer and is it worth the hassle of parking while out fishing?

Thanks, Bill

Parking it at a boat launch parking lot shouldn't be any different than parking with a boat trailer.  Carrying 4 yaks on a trailer would probably be ALOT easier on the back.

I have several friends that love their kayak trailers.  Most of them have also mounted lock boxes on the trailers to hold gear.

Love my trailer. Used it all summer with the family, and saved a huge amount of wear & tear on my back. Plus it doesn't take me nearly as long to load/unload. I just left the boats on there, so just had to load seat, paddles, & pfds.

almost forgot - no issue on parking so far.

short answer?  YES!!!!

I think the trailer is God's gift to yakfishers. I'd swear I heard angels singing when I got to the guard rail ramp in PC after battling an outgoing tide for hours to get back in (and that was for ONE boat). FOUR boats? No question.

It ain't pretty with no fancy schmancy locking anything. Just the equivalent of a stretch Humvee roof rack 1' off the ground. Personally, I would not buy a purpose built trailer as the conversion of pretty much any small boat trailer would do just fine. Finding one in OR should not be too hard either.
It is more trouble parking than just a car, but not much. Besides, at most boat ramps it's harder to find a car spot than a trailer spot. ;D

I'm actually gearing up to build myself a utility trailer this winter to be able to carry my yaks behind my truck camper.  I ruled out the idea of putting them on top of the camper, as that is nearly 12' off the ground.    :o

I have a full size truck bed locking aluminum box that I'll incorporate on the tongue to lock up PFD's, fishing gear, paddles, seats, etc...

We sell kayak trailers by Rack&Roll & Malone. Both are pretty sweet. The Malone is less expensive, and not as fancy looking, but it get's my vote.

For some reason the Malone trailer isn't on our site, but here's a link:

I picked up a decent utility trailer off craigslist that I still need to start modifying into a yak trailer. Hopefully by spring ::)

I'm leaning towards building something like this so my kids can "camp" in their own space when we take the truck camper, or I can tow it behind the Tacoma so I can do a basic overnighter closer to my intended yak fishing trip without needing the entire truck camper.

The tent pops down flat.  I probably won't make the sides any higher than the fenders.

Mine sat for 3 or 4 months before I forgot about modifying it and put on a couple athwartship bunks and started using it! It's really nice to NOT have to pick up the boat over your head or need to tear down the rigging before you can go home.

Nice choice, that's been my dream trailer for days. With your ingenuity and welding skills I'm sure you could whip up the ultimate yak fishing trailer. Looking forward to it.

Well, when you all get your expedition rigs done, we'll need to road trip it NWKA style.  The only question is whether we're going to Alaska or Baja
