You guys ready to design the NWKA custom SOT?  Brought to you by Tim Niemier, the founder of Ocean Kayaks.

Our newest project is "the 8 week kayak company." What we are doing is taking design specs from clients, then prototyping, fine tuning, and finally producing a kayak or small boat that is lighter, more durable, and cheaper to produce, than rotational molding or fiberglassing. In just 8 weeks our clients will have a show room quality boat ready for production.

I'd be interested to see what the production method is that is so quick?  Big multi-axis cnc?  Hmmmm.....

Better sealing Rod Pod with smaller center hatch built into it.

More options for rod holders along the sides, similar to Malibu kayaks.

Flat deck stern with a 6" hatch for access behind the tank well.

And before NANOOK can say it..... a front bulk head.  ;D

Y? as in, why is a bulkhead needed? that would take away from below deck storage
honestly, i'd opt for hatches that sealed really well, and a true skeg or hull drag plate at teh rear...

10' Flat bottomed river SOT for smoothing out the bumps while river drifting.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

How about 48" wide, SOT-like design with scupper holes?  With an oar kit!!!  Kind of like your own mini-drifter.  I always thought a NuCanoe with a little more rocker,  an oar kit and scupper holes, would be a nice river platform.

I heard it's something like a large sheets of plastic and a thermoforming process.

You mean 48" wide and oar kit with oar locks? Like a frame that is dropped into a set of scupper holes or holes set for oar locks?  I think it sounds pretty neat, you can make the oar lock holes multi use.  Maybe for a frame or rod holders if your paddling?  Man the power you would have with oars would be awesome.

More like oar locks on the rail.  Scupper holes for self draining.  Traditional drift boats have a high freeboard so water doesn't get it.  I think one of the benefits of SOT is that you have self draining scupper holes so you don't have to worry about water getting in.  48" for stability to keep from flipping ... bracing with oars is not as effective as bracing with a kayak paddle, so you need to width/stability.

Think of this idea as a single driftboat or a pram.  But more kayak like with short (or no) freeboard.

dunno, guys, i've seen 10 ft L x 48 inch W plastic rowboats in outdoor emporium there in seattle a few years ago.. this sounds a lot like that idea..

how bout a 10 1/2 ft long, 29inch wide, 16 inch deep, rounded to semi flat bottom with white water rocker , hatches that seal really well, a wide blade retractable and adjustable skeg, fuselage style interior ribs for stiffening ( am thinking of the habit of the OK fore deck to flex so much), scuppers, wide body adjustable foot pegs, and a seat with really good back support??

Sounds like you want to have the same ability an SOT has to take a swamping...and to keep on keepin' on.  I would like to see how that could be surf launched.  You row backward into the surf and if a wave breaks over you, you're still in good shape.

Those were NuCanoe's.  No scupper holes.  When they first came out I told them they should consider an oar kit.  A couple years later, they came out with one.  Of course I also told them they needed scupper holes.  No dice.

Yup.  You ever see those lifeguard rowboats?   Of course I wouldn't want an open ender bow like that, but look at the drains.

In looking at this picture, it also occurred to me that the oar kits would need to be raise a bit off the rails.  Gonna have to get INSAYN to build the anchor system and the oar kits!!!
