I may be able to safely answer for The Nothing about why he didn't use the scupper hole for his 'ducer.  While surf launching (in an actual surf), the Trident yaks can and will take water over the bow.  This fills the foot wells with water and makes the yak kinda tippy.  Quick draining of the foot wells is the primary concern at that moment, and with the scupper hole blocked 80%-90% with a 'ducer, water doesn't drain much before taking on another wave.

The mounting hardware is plastic.  There is some give in the mounting system.  One could bevel the bottom of 2 sides (of the six) of the nut to allow more clearance for improved drainage, then tighten until one of the beveled sides lines up with the scupper trench.

All I can recommend is to take on a wet surf launch with 2-4 more rollers behind the first drenching with your plugged scupper and then you'll see what I'm saying.  Even the pesky too long of a sonar strap finds it's way down and covers the scupper enough to make a huge negative difference in drainage.  I actually would have liked the scuppers to be bigger too!

Really the only upside to mounting a 'ducer under the yak is for water temp, and that is only good for the first 1' or so anyways. And I'm not savy enough to use water temps to my fishing advantage. Other than that, everything works the same with a shoot through hull 'ducer setup.

Swap out your sonar shield straps with the bungee setup.

And even then you can get fairly accurate water temps with a shoot through.  Works well with my Matrix 17 and the 'ducer gooped down.

I assume this is with the bungee buttons.  Do you have a detailed image? I was considering this as one of my upgrades this summer.

Uhh....Dom.  I believe I was the one that steered you in the direction of bungee on the sonar shield in the first place, back in Feb of 2009.   ;)

Just for the record, I LIVED through the 60s and 70s.  My memory is swiss-cheese.  So, please allow me to apologize in advance for any future lapses.  On the other hand I have found them to often be the source of some humor.  I no longer re-gift.

You could use bungee buttons.  I used hooks.  If I remember I'll snap a few close ups.

Two photos.  Use the strap hold downs to secure the hooks.

After going in and out of the rodpod five times a day on Saturday, I am going to get the hooks and convert my rodpod to bungees!  What a PIA!  I see why people are changing.

Keep your straps attached along with the bungee.  The bungee isn't surf launch/crash friendly.   :'(

Also, when attaching the front set of bungee hooks, reverse the front strap pieces so that you can later connect the right front and rear together, and the left front and left rear together so they are out of the way when just using the bungee.

I made them from tire chain tensioners.  You can do all kinds of crazy things with them.  8)
