I have thought of doing this out of PC in the summer for the tourons, but I'm not sure if the hassle/time would be worth the effort.

There's got to be more to it than that for OR. If not, I'm set in OR already.

What if I made it easy for you PP?

curious ears are listening..

I'm going to talk to ODFW today just to make sure that's all you need, but, I've got everything in place to start tomorrow if I wanted to (boats, gear, trailers, vans, license, insurance, cpr, first aid etc. but I'll need a fishy dude or two to help.

If we did a PC thing, I probably won't always be able to guide it, as I'm planning on taking 15 hrs. of school this summer, so I'd need some back up, and also another person to double up with for bigger groups. There's plenty of kayakers at the shop, but no other anglers.

I need to get a more realistic picture in my head before I make things official, but it's coming, and I'll need help. We'll talk more when I get things dialed.

This sounds like those times when you're supposed to leave a donation - don't call it a fee - on the lady's nightstand.  But I digress.  Good luck, man.  Sounds like you've got some serious eye rolling ahead of you.

Yeah I got some switch in me that makes me want to do it more if someone tells me not to, or that I can't. Ask my parents/teachers etc.  >:D

It really depends on how much BS my boss is willing to put up with. Ultimately, it's his money/time/resources that would make it possible.

I'm getting different answers from WDFW today. My lawyer buddy toldy me the chatch is in providing boats.

So I asked WDFW "what if people bring their own boats, or rent them from somewhere else?"

The answer was that only me and my boat need the non-salmon charter license. which makes this whole thing doable.

You might want to watch how the MPA's in the sound go before you go through too much trouble. http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,3808.0.html

I've been watching it. Right now I'm focusin on OR fishing.
Still working on WA, but have a feeling it's going to be long and confusing.

The official word is I'm official in OR as is. guide/outfitter license & requirements I currently have cover me for fishing.

Just ok'd PC day trips with the boss for summer 2010.

I think it is also a yet another different license for freshwater in WA.  Is that your understanding?

And Puget Sound salmon kind of sucks as there are limited licenses with no new ones being issued.  You'd have to buy one of the existing ones from someone selling it.

Yeah that is my understanding. I'm all good to go for WA bank guiding in FW, but would need another license to guide freshwater out of a boat/kayak.

I've had so much trouble catching salmon in OR & WA, I'm not even going to attempt to guide for that, on top of the fact they won't give out any new salmon charter licenses..... I like catching more than fishing :)

Right now I'm thinking of offering PC day trips for bottom fish, and tillamook & nehalem for steelies/cutties/and salmon if they take- as those are the area I know best.

I'm open to other "easy" paddling suggestions. It will force me to fish new places to get it dialed before I charge people.

I'll need to "test the waters" on a few of these trips to see what demand is. Once I get things running smooth, I'll be looking to expand and will need help. I'll definately be looking for fishy dudes who know the area like the back of their hand.

I'll volunteer to be your wingman at The Sportsman post-sesh.  Lots of fishy offerings in there on the late-night.

Been down that road.  Effing WDFW ... Not nuch you can do about it.

So WDFW just called me back and said they are going to have a meeting to discuss my problem on Monday, and call me back on Tuesday.

There may be hope dude. I honestly didn't expect to get that far that quick.

It sounds like someone up there is willing to help figure ya out.   Seems like they need to define what the described fees/permits actually cover.  If they don't match the situation, they should create one that does.

Cool deal Jason.  If they are willing to bend, can you see if they'll extend it to salmon in the salt?  I the door is cracked open, might as well try to walk right in!!!

Of course!

I'm not ruling it out for myself, I've had issues with chinook in OR that I need to work out before I'd feel good about guiding for them anywhere. Mostly just issues with the catching part, and I haven't ever shamed Washington with attempting to catch one there.

If you or anyone else here runs with this, we should definitely discuss networking.

I was just talking with the GF about how I can't imagine starting yakfish guiding from scratch. If it wasn't for the fact that I have everything needed ready to go with no investment, and that none of it is dependent on the success of yakfish guiding, there is no way I'd be able to drop the coin for gear, insurance, etc. on a roll of the dice. My particular situation is like the perfect storm of what's needed to pull it off.

I'm sure it will be slow to build, but it will be fun trying!
