It's been a long time since I've taken a paddling class.  Perhaps I'm due.

But ... I did take surfing classes this past week.  And I'm dialed in on a 12 foot soft top!!!  Well, at least on the kid's waves on the inside at Hanalei.  There were 40 footers breaking on the outside and the tow-in guys were charging it!!!

At the first rockfish classic in PC we had quite a few "newbie salt virgins"  who hit the salt for a day of fishing with no surf experience or training under their belts and I think most everyone had a great time with little to no problems.  PC has to be the mellowest surf launch on the north coast and on an average decent summer day most folks who would be interested in this type of thing would have no problems (adventurous outdoor types 8))..

I see it like mountain climbing, if you aren't "qualified for the ride" (overweight, unfit, medical issue, etc, etc) and able to make it safely, without endangering yourself or others, then you don't go, if necessary the guide makes the call.

I would have no problem taking first timers out thru small to moderate surf for a day of fishing. With just the basic "how to" and coaching on the beach and the appropriate safety gear.

Oh ... I was thinking long weekend for the Hobuck class.  Day 1 ... surfzone skills.  Day 2 ... fishing.

I think kayak fishermen are CHEAP.  But they're coming around, just look at all the interest in drysuits this year.

-Allen

It's true. how can kayak fisherman be so cheap and other fisherman spend so much money??? ha ha ha. I started fishing from a kayak because I couldn't afford a drift boat, and especially a PB. I used to fish the Smith in CA allot, and I always loved seeing the dudes from PDX & SF all decked out in $10k worth of simms & sage. It's also customary that they smoke cigars for some reason, something about having a $2k rod & reel I guess. I really loved pulling fish out in front of them on my sweet shakespear $19.99 rod/reel combo.

ironically 10 years later, if I sold all my kayak gear I'd have enough for a real sweet PB, but somewhere along the way I figured I really liked kayaking.

It's coming around for sure...geez just since I've been in OR since 2005. I never saw anyone fishing from a yak, at least seriously from a yak, in N CA from 2001-2005. Didn't see anyone in OR until 2007 when I ran into Jay at Nehalem...ever since then I see someone almost every time I go now. I know people have been doing it, but I sure didn't see them everywhere like I do now.

That would be sweet. I want to go right now.

Agreed. PC would be THE spot. I'm with you on the "qualified for the ride" but I'd say 75% of the people I teach & guide fall into the not qualified category. Medical issues are the only thing I've ever had to put the kabosh on, and it's got to be pretty extreme for me to say no. I generally operate on the rule that, if you want to do it, I can make it happen(within reason).

That being said, you'd be amazed at the wacky sh*t I've seen.

In general, I think the surf zone weeds out most of the people who don't REALLY want to do it anyways. If someone has the enthusiasm to do it, really that's all I'm looking for, experience or not. The rest is up to me.

Obviously we're not talking about launching off the beach into 20 footers your first time in a yak, but reasonably safe conditions. The last SOT surf class I did, no one had experience paddling in the ocean period, and everyone did great at Cascade Head on a 10ft day. Granted everyone hullied & yardsaled about 20 times, but it was fun because they really wanted to do it. If you didn't really want to be there, it would really, really suck and make things much more dangerous due to the " I give up" or "I can't do it" attitude.

SOT's make things much easier to get newbs out in the salt, cut's the instruction time on the beach WAY down. Stable & easy to re-board makes my life much simpler:)

As regards your WA licensing woes.  Sometimes it is better to feign ignorance and apologize rather than ask permission.

I've seen the same thing bird hunting.  Guys decked out in thousands in gear, carrying expensive 12 ga. autos, talking up their loads and trucks.  Then my bud and I out shoot them with our 20 ga. over unders with generic loads.  Hilarious.

Also, I'm a brother-of-the-leaf and smoke about a cigar a day.  Interestingly, I can't fish and smoke at the same time.  For me, doing so gives neither the attention it deserves.  Actually, I find it hard to do anything else except kick back with a drink while enjoying a smoke.

I don't smoke, however a nice cigar while relaxed in the wilderness camp, certainly has it's place.  May have to add a couple to the Revo camping gear. holt

MMMM I'm partial to the dark, sweet nicaruagan leaf.
I used to get a smoke called D'Bahia Muritiba...but alas D'Bahia has discontinued my fav.
I would love to find a good comparison at least.
 Got any suggestions ?

Not sure what was in the water today, but I sold 6 fishing SOT's completely rigged today. I think that's more than I sold all summer 09'. One guy just kept asking "is that the best money can buy?"

Blew my freakin mind. I asked if he and his wife needed a "support" paddler to follow them around and haul the water for their Baja trip. 8)

Their wives won't let them smoke at home.    :D

One of my favorites is the La Aurora 1495.  I am particularly partial to the #4 corona.  It has some Nic leaf.

A few years ago JR's Genuine Pre-embargo Counterfeit Cubans (GPECC) were Nic puros made by Perdomo .  The name is a JR joke.  It appears they have changed the blend, but if they have preserved the flavor profile they were actually quite good, though a bit strong.

If you are looking for a Nic puro or majority you might want to consider Perdomo.

Frank LLaneza recently accepted the helm of Nicaraguan American Cigar, the successor company to NATSA, and has come out with a new release I am anxious to try, Siglo Limited Reserve.  I find the #1 and #2 most intriguing.  Yes, the name is a direct ripoff of the Cuban Cohiba Siglo series, but that's just marketing.  Llaneza is one of the best blenders on the planet.

One more.  Seeing your "MMMM" reminded me of the Maria Mancini Magic Mountain.   A cigar manufactured in Hon with a Nic filler.  At the time I enjoyed them.  Of the MM line I seem to remember enjoying the the DeGaulle the most.  Also available through JRs.

I have a little website with a number of reviews.  The reviews are a little dated, but still useful.

I am partial to, have always, will always, and smoke way to many, Macanudo Petite Coronas.  I limit myself to only smoking in the boat while fishing, which is kind of silly as I fish several days a week ::).

Talked with WDFW today after their meeting, and they said they have to talk with a few more people, and will get back with me by the end of the week.

I detected a hint of something good in her voice. I have a good feeling about this one.....she said I would be the first to know.

Think it would help if a few more of us would express an interest in this?

I think I got it. I feel there is easy potential to overwhelm the two ladies I've been working with. I feel like if we start pounding them, they may get irritated and just say F it and then we're all SOL. kind of like what I'm hoping for with the invasive species permits, but not on this one!

I'll wait until they don't give me what I want, then we'll unleash the pester bomb :)

Right now I'm in sugary sweet you are so helpful, informed, is that your sister? no way your daughter?, I love your sweater mode. ;)
