I have been lurking for a while figured it was time to introduce myself.  I am currently living in Boston but will be moving to Portland in June.  I have been yak fishing for about 5 years and paddle a T-140.  Most of my time fishing is spent chasing stripers in the salt or trout in freshwater, but I will fish for whatever fish are around.
I am really looking to try my luck on the left coast and have already learned a lot from this site, but I know I need to learn a lot more.  I shouldn't have too many questions until I get out there and realize I have no clue what I am doing.
I do have one question for now though.  I am helping my non fishing bro plan my bachelor party and am looking for a good charter boat to take a bunch of us out for the day.  What are some good charter/guide outfits in the Portland area?  Also, it will be during the first week in August so we can go for salmon, but do you guys think we will have more luck for catch and release sturgeon?

See you on the water,
Nathaniel

Sturgeon will be closed in august, unfortunately, but you might have some luck with steelhead in the Sandy iirc. It also be a good time for bottom fish or ocean coho I'd you want to run to the coast...

do a search or two for "Bouy Ten Salmon fishing Guides"  1st week of august is a tad early (week or so) but you still would be in the ball game.  World famous fishery, and its only a hour and a half from PDX.  The right guide could also set up up with some awesome (catch and release only) sturgeon action in the same area. Astoria is a great town with some nice hotels and restaurants etc if you plan to stay the night in the area.

If you are set on Sturgeon, call Charlie Foster at http://www.nwsturgeonadventures.com/.  His goal is to have every client catch the biggest fish of their lives, and I think he succeeds most of the time.

And we'll look forward to fishing with you soon.

Thanks for the info so far.  I was looking into bouy 10, but everything I read said we might be a bit early.  I did not think about heading out for ground fish, but depending on the number of friends who are going, it may be my best bet.

Bouy ten is a little early for "inside" the bouy.  But, at that time most guides are running trips "outside" (ocean) to put the hurt on coho.   If you are more adventurous there are also tuna charters running out of several north coast ports.

I would love to fish for tuna, but I have a little problem with sea sickness and don't really want to spend my bachelor party puking, at least not until after the fishing part.
