This is good info...I have yet to try to fish for flounder/sole yet (I've always caught them fishing for something else) but I plan to sometime soon, perhaps even this week (I'm in Bellingham).

This may be a dumb question, but do flatfish show up on the fish finder?  Paddling over areas with a flat bottom (which is most areas) I can't see any fish at all on the finder, so I'm not really sure where to drop a line.  Is there something special I should be looking for other than a flat bottom or do I just kinda trust they are down there? And is there a certain depth I should be shooting for, say, 40 feet?  Deeper? shallower?

I *think* I have seen them on the FF.  On my Hummer what I think are flatfish look well, like a flat fish arch (not meant to be a pun) just above or right on the bottom.  Sometimes there are a lot of them, looking like a school.  I could be deluding myself, and next time out I should test the hypothesis by dropping bait.

Post point park, hmmm...assuming Marine Park that's to the left at the end of Harris street (near Alaska ferry).  Let me know if that's wrong.  I'll give that a shot tomorrow afternoon if the weather still looks good.  I'll report back any catches and what I see on the finder.  Thanks guys!

For anyone who wants a limit of flounder, please come to Richmond Beach! I sure could use a dent in the population here. Anyone who's had these buggers molest your salmon gear all day long knows what I'm talking about. ;D

If you want to know what to use, try anything. I've had them bite on cut plug herring, hoochies to a 6.5" iron. Last year I had one follow my gear all the way from the bottom in 120' FOW to the yak and commit suicide on the hoochie once I stopped reeling in.

Launch anywhere at Richmond beach and paddle out about 100 yards. It's mostly sand out there. Drop anything from bait to Kastmasters and I'm sure you'll be walking home with a full stringer.

I'm guessing dogfish.

Well, it was at Richmond Beach.  I've seen dogfish at Port Susan and the sonar returns were different.

You mean you can tell the difference between fish species on the FF?  Which FF?  I need one of those.   :tongue2:

Pole's probably right. Other than salmon the only thing I've caught at RB were dogfish and flounder.

Well, fished for a while at post point and came up with one flattie on a worm, and one crab (!?) on a jig.  Beats working I suppose!

The flounder got the hurt put on 'em today. I went out at Richmond Beach for a paddle and just brought the rod along for giggles. Bounced around a sabiki rig on my panfish rod and cycled  through a few until this rock sole taco'd it. AOTY points! :spittake:

BTW Bsteves. That average caught fish size notation below AOTY entrants total points is sweet. Nice work!

I have never caught a dogfish at RB, just flounder, salmon, and crab.  Oh, and a harbor seal.

Let me guess, you've never used cut plug herring there have you?

I trolled cut plug herring a lot at RB going for chinook and coho.  Had flounder latch on when close to the bottom for chinook, but never a dogfish.  Weird.  I never used live bait for flounder.   The dogs were thick as fleas in the north part of Port Susan last summer.  Between two of us we caught about 30 in about 3 hours, even moving a number of times.

never a dogfish.
Are we talking about the same Richmond Beach? I usually bring 6-8 mooching rigs when mooching out there. And at times that's only lasted me over a few hours because of them tearing them up. Whatever the case may be at least you know of a good bait for flounder. ;)
