I'm looking for ideas on transporting my rods. Right now my rods are bundled together and layed in the back of my truck. They roll around and slide sometimes when driving to the grounds, I've broken guides like this.

Anyone build a rack or anything similar for their trucks? Pics? Someone did something interesting with some cheap Berkley rod racks but I can't find the thread.

I was thinking that FFTW had something that he posted up a little while ago. It wasn't along the lines of a rack of some sort, more like sleeves that slip over the rods. This might not be the fix you're looking for, but it might help. Those also work great when storing your rods in you yak and keeping them from getting messed up when sliding them in and out. What were those things Wali?

Anything will help. I might be able to make mods to others ideas.

I have a ratcheting cargo bar that I use in the back of my truck. I was thinking about buying another and mounting something to them like clips or a cheap factory rack. Looking for any ideas.

I decided to ask the Northern fisherman (here and Nocal) because of all the great mods you guys come up with.

I use 8' ABS pipe. simple and rugged.
used a 6" pool noodle(imagine that) to make a disc that fit in the capped end to protect the rod tips. If im traveling ill wrap the rods up in a thin, foam insulated, sheet of laminate before I slide them in.
It gets stacked on the rack with the boats and all ops are smooth.
make sure you check with your airline before you attempt to fly with it.
some will, some wont.
cant say enough about putting a handle on it.
hope this helps

Here's what I came up with today. I would have liked to have used something other than a 2x4 for a cleaner look (maybe I'll paint it black)  but this is functional and  pretty much what I was after. I have to roll with my tailgate open so now I will feel a little better about my rods in the bed.

Just some ABS and a 2x4. Pretty secure as is. The ABS is secured to the 2x4 with 2 screws @ each 2x4 to keep the whole thing from shifting. The 2 outside rods are trigger sticks, I cut a notch in the bottom half of the pipe for the triggers. The last 8" or so is cut into a half moon and it keeps the rods from rolling over. The center is a Sabiki rod.

ok, that's a different approach.. but seeing the bed is unadorned with a rack, or cap, or anything, keeping them low like that should keep them from flying out.

btw, going back to the mention of PVC pipe, here's a link to Mark Sosins ideas on making his own transport case. his earlier models ( like 10 yrs ago) used a piano hinge in the middle of one that had been cut pretty much in half to form a clam shell door. he's since went more simply;

Yeah, I was just looking for something to and from fishing grounds not so much shipping. I also wanted to avoid having to break them down.

I looked at these giant finger traps at Gander Mt. called "Stick Jackets". They should be great for sliding a rod into the hull and help keep the guides from catching. I still have not tried them.

They won't provide any kind of protection like the pipe racks though.

Here's a link to that post: http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,3151.0.html

WR: I'm a big adherent of the Sosin school of reasonin: You can build it better and BRING EVERYTHING.

Although that second axiom can be a bit challenging on the yak. ;D

nice idea!

you could add some velcro straps to hold the rods in the tube. just glue the straps to the ABS with goop.
 just a suggestion.

Great minds think alike.  I've done the same as hydrospider, ABS pipe, one end permanently capped, the other with a clean out fitting.  Foam blocks at bottom and top to protect.  I've only flown with them 3 or 4 times and that was only on a single airline.  Generally, they require "special" handling, like bikes and surf boards.  Tape a business card under clear tape to it.  If traveling with more than one, tape them together.
