Hello All,

I wanted to mention that I purchased an OK Prowler 15 'second' for $740 (after taxes) from REI.

When I searched their web site for Ocean Kayaks, no mention of this offer appeared.  Inspired, I searched specifically for a Prowler 15 with success!!!

I have not compared my boat with a 'first'...there might be some details that might be reason to classify it as a 'second'.., but I'm stoked regardless.

When I ordered my boat, about three weeks ago, they said they had ten more 'seconds' at the same price.  Another bonus is the fact that we live in REI land.  It took less than a week for the kayak to be delivered FREE to the REI store of my choosing.  (I considered delivery timing more than proximity, but it worked out that the closest store was also the fastest!!!)

If I had ordered this boat elsewhere (without leaving with stocked boat) I would still be outfitting rather than preparing for my second trip and enjoying crabbing and shorter day adventures.  ;D

Thank you for your help in getting me going.  I will post about my first trip that I took last weekend to Orcas Island.

Cheers!
Jesse

I see!!!  So yes, there are $679 Prowler 15 seconds at REI ... http://www.rei.com/REI-Outlet/product/761376

Ocean Kayak Seconds only have cosmetic blends, something like uneven coloring or misaligned logos.  There is nothing structurally wrong with them.

Looking forward to your reports Jesse.

This sounds like a great deal. As a 220 lb new kayaker that loves to fish, would this an appropriate vessel? If not, any suggestions...Most of the time I like to stand in moving water and pretend I'll catch a nice and fat chrome steelhead (hence the name). Sometimes it actually happens like that too ;). I'd like a kayak equally at home on rivers and lakes. Being dry is a plus but I've ridden enough SOTs to know it's mostly a pipe dream. SINKs are fine if the ergonomics work out - I'm not so flexible anymore.

Thanks for any suggestions...
Jay

I'm 6'3" and ~215# today.  I like the Prowler 15.  However, be warned, it is a wet ride.

When you say you want a yak at home on rivers, what type of rivers?  I'd probably opt for something a little shorter for rivers.  15 feet is a lot of yak to turn on a river, especially with any amount of rapids.  Fishin-T can give you some more thoughts on rivers as he just floated the John Day in his P15.

The only whitewater I've done was in the SoCal surf. These days I'd rather wade looking for the big guys hiding in the bubbles. I paddled for 5 hours yesterday in the Willamette right here around Newberg. I rented a 10' Pamilico SINK and it was easy paddling.

For the Willamette, something in the 12-15' range would be fine.  I've taken my 12'5" Hobie out on the Willamette around Meldrum Bar, Columbia around Rooster Rock, and Multnomah Channel -- no problems w/ boat wakes or manuvering in the current.  However, if you are wanting something for the lower Clackamas, McKenzie, etc..., you want a much shorter whitewater oriented boat.

Might want to try a few other rental options.  Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe and Scappoose Bay Kayaking both rent boats for you to try out.

Thanks for the tip. Since I have Mondays off, my wife and I will probably be test driving a few models in the upcoming weeks on flat and moving water. Based on what I've read and experienced so far, I like the Tarpon 14/16 and the Prowler 15 models for me. Not too sure about the wife yet. We both want Yaks that move well when travel for pleasure or distance is the main goal as well as a good fly fishing platform. Being able to stand in flat water sounds like an interesting time... ;D

Threadjack?  What threadjack?   ???

You've just filled my "administering quota" for the whole week.  I got to use the "split" function.

I think you'll have a hard time standing on P15's or T140/160's.

There are a few models that you could stand on, but you'll trade off speed for stability.  Try the Ocean Kayak Big Game and the Wilderness Systems Ride.  The other one is the Malibu XFactor, but you'll probably not find a Malibu dealer around there.  Happy Hunting!
