Well the place where we're staying has a few 'yaks, so I went out for a spin last night. A guy gave me directions to Jackson beach... beautiful spot, but not much more. I fished the back side of the little island out front for a lot of fish, but nothing to write home about. It was mainly short lings, small rockfish, and a BUNCH of sharks. I just couldn't keep the sharks off. Basically I need to find a place with structure, kelp, pinnacles, etc. I really want to find some cabezon and larger rockfish for the dinner table. As I said, the place was great and there were lots of sea lions (apparently mating???)... lots of birds, etc... life in general.

This morning was a true test of will (family or fishing), as we drove down to check out the driftwood at south beach. We pulled up and there were SICK BOILS ALL OVER... AS CLOSE AS WHIPPING DISTANCE FROM SHORE.  :o It appeared to be salmon slashing up the water, as they pushed the bait up so the birds would hammer them from above. Arrrggggghhhhhhh!!! Anyway, I may have to figure out the salmon gear thing and try these guys before I leave. If not I at least need some good bottom fishing.

Man, I've seen some pictures of huge kings, caught off of South Beach. A spin rod with some buzz-bombs or Pt. Wilson Darts will do the trick. Good Luck!
