I've noticed a strange problem recently with my Hobie Adventure.  When I'm pedaling hard-ish on the mirage drive and the kayak speed is increased, natually the bow goes up and the stern goes down.  When this happens, the cargo "trough" of the kayak (behind the seat) fills with water, at times over halfway.  My guess is that the scupper holes are getting pushed down below the water line when the kayak is moving fast.  This seems to be supported by the fact then when I am not pedaling, the trough is empty.

It's not a trip-ender, but an unfortunate side-effect is that the water splashes over the divider, into the cockpit.  I end up sitting in a pool of water for the rest of the day.  Not very comfortable!

At first I thought I was overloading the back, but the last two times out I traveled *extremely* light and it still happened.  The only other weight that could be shed is off my beer belly, and that's not likely to happen anytime soon ;)

Has this happened to anyone else?  Are there any solutions?  Something to plug the scupper holes maybe?

Thanks!

My Tarpon came with scupper plugs.  I'm sure Hobie has something similar.

Hmm. Can't say that I've noticed the rear tankwell filling up but then again I never look back there while pedaling. There are some scuppers that Hobie makes and have a few spare ones for you if you want them. The Addy is a wet ride since it rides low in the water. Some yaks are drier rides but becomes a trade off in kayak performance.

Zee - I'll take 'em!  I'll be down in Seattle Sunday and I'll give you a call to see if you're around.

Looks like I'll be fishing Lake Wash. w/ Lee so far. Feel free to bring the yak and gear.

Wish I could!  I'm in town for an event at UW.  I definitely want to fish with you though, we should plan something.  I'm not averse to driving down to fish your local waters or we could meet N of seattle somewhere.  Anyway, I'll try you Sunday evening and see if by chance you're around.

You mean the back 40 is not supposed to be a live well? :o
 ;D

My tankwell is generally very wet if not 1/2 full. I've come to live with it and I'm pretty certain that its a function of load though. With me and my gear I know I'm pushing the capacitive limit of the Adventure.
The only downside of a plugged scupper is that it holds the water that does make it in.

BTW: PoolNoodle makes EXCELLENT scupper plugs.

I've never seen a kayak rise up in the bow like a power boat from speed, only from uneven loads. How frickin fast are you going? :o
