I'm going to have to disagree with the shotgun start. That will create one hell-uv-a bottleneck in my opinion.

I agree... Much easier for a PB to dodge a couple yaks at a time over an extended launch time, rather than 30 all in the hole at once.

Besides, I don't want to have to stand around waiting for folks to get their "ducks in a row" anymore than they would want to have to hurry to catch up with me.

Speaking of leaving the shotgun at home - I don't have a shotgun, but Oregon is an open carry state right?

Oregon is concealed carry. Oregon does not recognize any other states concealed permit.

my understanding, however, if you're actively going to a fishing location, actively fishing, or returning from fishing, you can legally conceal & carry. Provided you have a valid fishing license and rockfish identification certificate

edit:
 ah, yes, here it is:

166.250 Unlawful possession of firearms. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section or ORS 166.260, 166.270, 166.274, 166.291, 166.292 or 166.410 to 166.470, a person commits the crime of unlawful possession of a firearm if the person knowingly:
(a) Carries any firearm concealed upon the person;
( b ) Possesses a handgun that is concealed and readily accessible to the person within any vehicle; or
( c ) Possesses a firearm and:
(A) Is under 18 years of age;

166.260 Persons not affected by ORS 166.250. (1) ORS 166.250 does not apply to or affect:
(h) A person who is licensed under ORS 166.291 and 166.292 to carry a concealed handgun.
( b ) Licensed hunters or fishermen while engaged in hunting or fishing, or while going to or returning from a hunting or fishing expedition.

yes Oregon is an "Open Carry" state.  You are allowed ((except a few cities who have passed ordinances (often called loaded weapon ordinaces), and public buildings etc.etc.)) to carry a loaded weapon in plain sight, think holster ala John Wayne.  If you conceal it on your person or in your vehicle you must have a concealed carry permit.  Or be participating in the situation The Nothing stated above.

Just a couple questions...

Will this be a group launch or can we start when we feel like it?
Contestants can launch whenever they feel like it as long as they've signed their waver.

Figuring no backup venue, is Depoe Bay the only area we can fish?
Launching and landing will be restricted to Depoe Bay unless an alternate venue is required.  You can fish where every you want as long as you can paddle/peddle there and back before 3:30PM.  At this point, the alternate venue would be The Fingers of the South Jetty in Newport and the launch time would coincide with low slack.  If the forecasts deteriorate, I'll elaborate on this.

Do you have to be a NWKA member or is the tournament open to anyone?
Anyone who's paid the entry fee and signed the waiver will be allowed to participate.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

Yep, PP's right. I forgot all about that. but theres so many places you can't open carry it just seems easier to get a concealed permit and just conceal the gun. Here's a summary of Oregon Open carry laws:

Summary
Oregon is a traditional open carry state. However, their preemption statute only covers concealed handgun license holders from city or county passed bans against loaded firearms in public places. To our knowledge, only the cities of Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Oregon City, Salem, and Independence have passed loaded firearms bans encompassing all public places, and other cities have passed bans specific to Parks. Also, all "public buildings" are also off limits throughout the entire state unless you have a concealed handgun license.

I only ask cause it's gonna be in the car.  Sounds like I should put it in the trunk once I reach Oregon.

Springfield XDm 3.8" in .40 S&W

I live in South Tacoma - you ever notice how often Pierce County is on "Cops" ?

In the last year, there was a drive-by literally 1 block away from my house, two guys shot an armored car driver in a Wal-mart, and those 4 Lakewood cops were shot 2 miles from my house.  Neat huh?

Add that in with too many close calls in Afghanistan, and packing is pretty much a neccessity in my mind.

You'll find the Lincoln County tweekers refreshingly timid.
