Hey All,

Well, I've been looking for that first fishing yak for awhile now and decided to pull the trigger on Ocean Kayak's new Prowler Trident!  I was going to go ahead and buy the prowler 15 from REI.com, where they are still selling them for under $700, because it sounded like no one was really sure when the Trident was going to be available, but I decided to call Ocean Kayak directly two weeks ago and they said they had one in stock already!  Plus it had a slight "blem" on it so they were selling it 10% off.  Picked her up on Friday in Ferndale!!!!!!  Spent the weekend getting her ready for a two day camping/fishing trip with Espiga, but the wind blew us out so we're postponing till this weekend.

As she is my first fishing yak, I don't have much in the way of comparative experience to share with you but she is a bit longer and wider than the prowler 15 and definitely sits a bit dryer.  Espiga was jumping up and down regarding the "rod-pod" storage hatch, which is great for rods and for stowing all kinds of gear in the stern of the yak that he can't access easily with his prowler.  She paddles easily and seems very stable.  I was able to pull a nice crab pot without any fear of tipping.

Hoping to get in an afternoon of fishing and crabbing around the Dungeness Spit this week and will share more with you as I go.

I'll snap as many photo's as I can.   :)

Only draw back so far is that there doesn't seem to be a good place to install a live well.....hmmmm......any ideas?

Stoked on my new girl!!!!!  I think she'll treat me well.

Dunno how you pulled it but you got it waaay before a lot of other people. By livewell do you mean bait tank? If so there's plenty of room in the back tankwell. A 3 gallon paint bucket w/ a bilge pump works great.

Hey Zeelander,

Thanks for the info on the bait tank.  I guess I was looking for one that I could install in the trident similar to the ones available as a kit for the Prowler 15.  No worries though....I'll figure something out.  I like u're idea, but would like to find something that sits in front of me.

As far as the Trident....I do feel a bit lucky, but there are more available right now.  I called my local dealer about 3 weeks ago to see if he knew when they were going to be available and his answer was "no time soon and nobody knows exactly when".  I called OK right after and they said they had two in stock!  I'm not sure if there is some communication breakdown between OK and the dealers or what.....but if someone else wants one and is willing to drive a few minutes north of Bellingham, she's all u'res!!!  Mine and the other are both Sunset color...and as far the the 10% discount for the blem?....I can't seem to find one and they carry the full warranty, so if you want to save around $100 u might want to look into it.

I've never heard of a bait tank/livewell installed on a yak infront of the rider.

One thing to note about those kits where they add the tank into the yak itself is they rarely seal very well. I talked @ length with the owner of Great White Kayak Company www.gwkc.com in NorCal and he was telling me some real horror stories about what has and can happen with those. Worst was it created a leak and weak point in the yak which made it a "small lake only" yak. :-[ If you want to go big water with that yak (Puget Sound, Pac Ocean) I'd recommend looking into it more.

To carry live bait, I'd go with a bait-tube, which is a section of ABS or PVC (perforated), that you tow. The concept really developed a couple of years ago, in the SoCal and Bay areas. Check their boards for the details.
