Hit up Pacific City on Thursday for the first time of 2010.  The weather was exactly as the forecasts predicted - mostly cloudy with an offshore 5-10 mph breeze early. Clouds started breaking around 9 and the wind quit entirely, then the wind picked up out of the WNW at about 10:30 and built up to eventually make it too much by about 1:30.  There was a pretty good north to south current which made for a great drift until the wind started kicking.  Overall it was a somewhat slow day.  Ended up keeping 4 decent sized rockfish, the largest being 18" and threw back a bunch of small ones.  Only caught one keeper sized ling but was barely over 22" so I tossed him back.  Had fun with some smaller lings and got some video of them underwater.  Caught a great ride back in through the surf and soaked up the sun on the beach while packing up.

Cheers!

Thanks for the video Jeff.  I have to admit that when I first looked at that first photo you posted I thought it was from the point of view of the beach with huge waves breaking near the rock.  Obviously, it's just the coastal hills with some fog, but it kind of freaked me out for a bit.

Awesome day out!  I see you were trying for "mister big ling" with that Black rock for bait.  You using the same rig we tried that day or have you improved on it?  I have been working on some gear ideas that might help success in that department (more user friendly). Water looked really clear, wonder if that has anything to do with the slow fishing?  You see any baitballs etc like we saw early last year?..  That pic does look like a monster wave is going to wipe out PC.

Your tax day was waaaaaaaay better than mine. (I was stuck on a plane)

That was some very cool video and got me jonesin go play out by that bell. Guess I'll have to settle for some warm air and water. ::)

I loved the ling vid and that landing was all pro! You made it look sooooo easy (that was the first take right?) ???

I looked again at that first pic and it does look like a huge wave breaking outside of the rock coming in with the bouy on the wrong side!  :o

Yeah, pretty much the rig you came up with, minus one hook. It actually worked really well as far as how easy it was to use. Too bad that guy was my only taker.  ::)
No bait balls on the sonar, btw.

Nice video. What kind of cam you got?

I'm using a earlier model of the Olympus Stylus, the 720 SW. It does a good job with video IMO. It's highest resolution is 480p which is what that vid is in, the sound it captures sucks though. I would like to upgrade to the Tough 6020, but it might be a while.

I see you upgraded and got a brain bucket.  I was so on the fence about hitting PC with ya, but I had to hold back for two reasons. Trailer build being my highest priority, and rib cartilage healing as number two.   Bit it pretty good on spring break and tore some cartilage on several ribs.  Today while finishing up some work on the trailer tongue, I merely leaned forward and had a front rib pop out, knocked the wind out of me, and nearly put me on the ground.  :o

I've now resorted to riding the lazy boy for the rest of the day.

But, dude that ling hanging onto the rockfish was sick!  Did you get them both in the yak, or did the ling leggo?

The bell buoy never sounded so good! Great vid clips man. You gotta love the tenacity of those lings. And nice brace on the landing!!

Thanks, I've been working on that!  ;)

The one biting the rockfish just let go. They were both really small so I figured it'd be cooler to get video than to pull them in.

My son got a kick out of the underwater footage.  Made me replay it over and over.   8)
