I forgot how hot Emmy Jo looked in those boots.  She could have used a paddle lesson too.

OMG!  I thought I was the only one thinking that.

Isn't that a line from the "New Zoo Review" theme song?

No, now that I think of it, it was "we'll have FUN learning what we don't know"

Hey Salty. Blood, sweat and tears is a good way to learn. Glad you didn't pay a much worse price in the AOTY greed race. I too am guilty of this and have learned my lessons by examples on this site and the hard nosed way(too smart for my own good)with out paying an ultimate price. I was wonerin' if anyone went out with the conditions forcast for this last weekend in the salt. I spent a few hrs on Lake Stevens fishin" for Kokaneee but got skunked. Knew conditions were not real great but since the lake is 15 minutes away I drove down to take a look. Okay, not great but still safe. Fished for about 3 hrs and when the wind really started picking up, I paddled my way home. Left the yak on the rack, and checked early this am outside and put the yak away. Two power failures later and a trip to the hospital for Yakchik, and I knew I'm getting seasoned. there's always another day.

Thanks fishnut, I wish i had been doing this a few years back we might have been able to go on a paddle together. We lived in marysville near the iga store on 4th and i had a business in everett. At the time i was steelheading on the sky a lot but never thought about a paddle. Next time i get over there i'll give you a holler. there is a little lake out in monroe(meadow lake) that has no public access but i have a friend on the lake and we can try for some bass, trout and i think there might even be some cuts in there. If you and your wife are ever over on the peninsula give us a holler. my wife and i would love to hit the water with you. I should have a little more of a handle on the area by then.

I just hate to see things given up on because you might have to learn something and it's challenging. I can teach a 12yo kid everything I know in 2 hours. A 60 yo man stuck in his ways and more concerned with ego than learning may never learn.

i can't even think of a reason why someone would argue AGAINST proper technique other than being stubborn because you don't like being the one without answers.

I'm just offering up what I know to be true to help when I see situations where these things are the solution. Don't take my advice, I don't care. I'm trying to help not cause an argument.

Hey Jason, you're doing it again.

Sorry. Just passionate about kayaking. No worries on my end......gone yakfishcamping.......with the HD video camera >:D

no matter how you slice and dice and your paddle technique...20kt winds is nothing to take lightly in a kayak...i dont want to be reading about you and what a nice guy you were in the local newspaper

every year someone dies out there

Agreed. Just putting it out there how to better deal should you find yourself in that situation unexpectedly. I'm not saying you'll make it back to the launch with proper technique, but you'll make it closer than if you were just muscling.

But you're right it's really the decision making process that should be emphasized. Know your limits. If you're not out there, there's no danger.

Sequim Salty, It's called the Juan de Fuca Strait but It's really the Juan de Fuca Rivers....    One river of tidal flow currents and another river of wind.......   2 rivers....
Is it hard to paddle upriver??   Yes
In the straits the winds and the currents require us paddling humans to respect the existing conditions......
Use the tides and winds to help push you toward your destinations and then return you after the tide has changed it's mind...
Can the  tidal flow will trump the wind? On big tides...Yes
The wind almost always will be west June thru August.... Calmer in the a.m. and building through the day because of the thermal low crated by inland heat...
If you need to go west.... Don't paddle out in a west wind and an incoming tide...
Know your tides.... They don't always turn at the exact lows or highs... Sometimes there can be a lag of almost 2 hours....
Good luck and memorize your tidebook :banjo: I love that Banjo guy
..Calm winds and fair seas..

Ditto to all of that!  Yesterday I experienced the evening wind coming back out of Esquimalt Harbour!  Boy what a work out that was just getting back to Esquimalt Lagoon!

We paddled in on a rising tide and the wind to our backs.  Sea conditions were less than 1' waves.  Coming out of the Harbour we had sustained winds of 20-25 kph coming from the South West and 3' seas!

Wow.   Looks like I'd better bone up on the Strait tideflows--planning a trip next week to F-water Bay....!!
