Butt from a reliable source at the Port of Brookings-Harbor.
An unknown (at this time) Kayaker, paddled out the mouth of the Chetco and went to the point just north, where he applied his skill and landed no less than 5 Stripers! This was the case last week ,Thursday I believe. Needless to say, he had the whole cleaning station buzzing with talk of his catch.
Confirmed report.....several 50# - 70# Pacific Halibut have been caught out of Gold Beach. Several smaller ones have been brought in here in the Brookings area (Pelican Bay).
Those Stripers should be headed for the Umpqua River spring run.
After a week of traveling Oregons back roads...I am anxious to get me Yak on the water!!!!
happy spring fishing to all!!!

I've heard the halibut fishing down there has been good as well.  As for the stripers, I can't say i've heard anything about that...

I was browsing Googlemaps yesterday and looking over the Chetco river mouth area. Are those rocky structures in Chetco Cove fishy, and legal to fish if so?   Also looks like the campground on the south side of river bar would be a reasonable place to have a tourny HQ, and launch from if fishing is good around there.   8)

YES! YES! YES!
We would also have the graces of the local Yacht club and their facilities. I can also swing plenty of dock space for free for a few days at least.
If we want a private "camp" I can get access to the large tract of land on the North end of the bridge along the river.
Also, within 3 miles N. and S., are good fishing areas easily accessed with a Yak.
Butt alas, it is at the far end of the earth for our bunch :(

During the one time I went camping in Brookings just a couple years ago I fell in love with that area.   :love4:

The harbor, the weather, the near shore structure...(sigh).  It seemed like a very kayak-fishing-friendly kind o' place.

YES! it is very fishy with easy access by Yak.
If ya wanna catch some Sea run Cutty's....season starts next weekend in the Chetco.
You can paddle at least 3, maybe 4 miles upstream with an incoming tide, 2 to 3 miles with an outgoing tide.

It's near the tail end of the spring spawn.  I wonder if those stripers came back out to the salt.  In the Sac river the stripers enter the river in the late fall for the spring spawn.

If they are coming back out, and the bait holds around, those schools will still be there.  Go get them!!!

I spent almost an entire year of my life (330 days) fishing the Smith and had no idea they had stripers.

as far as I know, and this is from locals, not any educational authority such as BSteves, they are actually just passing us for more northern rivers. The farthest South river to have an actual "striper run" is the Umpqua. Although a very reliable local has seen them circling under the 101 bridge over the Chetco. (his home was up on the hill a few hundred feet).
A few are caught here each year by chance mostly. Only one man I have seen target them here, and he fishes the south end of Whaleshead Beach ( also a favorite surf perch hole).

Would be a cool place to house a NWKA/NCKA beat down, BBQ, free for all shinding.
Kinda like the Sturgis of kayaking.   Not really a tourney, but more of a HUGE meet and greet fishing get together.

I was in Crescent City on Wed/Thurs.  But had to beat feet home.  Second time in the past couple months.  Next time up I'm going to have to keep heading north!!!

Left San Jose at 8AM.  In Crescent City at 3PM.  MLPA meetings/dinner.  Wake up, give pubic comment.  Leave CC at 1PM.  Home at 9PM.  Lot of driving for no fishing.   >:(
