Yesterday I had a potentially serious problem with my mirage drive.  I was out around Burrows island and inadvertantly hit some kelp so I tried to pull up my drive to clear it of any vegetation, but it wouldn't come.  I landed it on a beach and turned the kayak on its side to see what was the matte,r and I saw the large 14"(ish) pin (that holds the fins on the frame) sticking 4-5" out the front of the drive.  I banged it back in, shrugged, and went on my merry way.

At the end of the day I was about to land and tried again to pull the drive up - same problem.  This time it was a little further out of the frame.  Any further and the thing might have come apart.  It would seem the motion of the pedaling is for some reason slowly pushing the pin out the front.  Could be bad news.

Anyone ever had this problem and if so, is there a remedy?

Thanks!

There isn't some kind of retaining pin that holds it in?

Are you referring to the vertical rods running the length of the leading edge of the flippers?  Or the front to back horizontal pin around which the flippers rotate?

The vertical rods screw into the housing.

The horizontal pin has retaining screws.  Perhaps they are loose or missing.  Check the center of the pin on the bottom.

Here are photos of both sides of my drive.

SOLVED!  Thanks demonick.  Yes, there is a small hex screw right between the fins that seems to keep it in place.  Somehow I missed that.  It was loose.  Tightened it down and it's good to go.  Thanks!

would there be any warranty reason to not go back to those screws and add a drop or two of marine grade loctite to them to prevent this in future?
