I would say its far superior to any SINK when you compare them strictly for fishing, and thats why were here isn't it 8).  No one fishes in 4-5ft windwaves or huge swells or 8knt current or 25kt winds, in these conditions a SINK is king but when it comes to trolling for salmon, hovering over deepwater structure for bottomfish, crabbing etc. etc. etc a hobie mirage drive is at the front of the SOT line IMO.

yes, but these are the conditions that occur regularly on the ocean, and eventually, if you travel far enough from the car, you will encounter them. A sea kayak is the proper craft for dealing with the sea.

Like I said, a sea kayak is made for the sea, and no other kayak is.

What's a "sea kayak"?   ???

-Allen

Oh yea, it was like 7-8 swell and miracle of miracles...i survived!

Dudes, again. I'm just saying that doesn't make it the BEST craft for the environment.

I don't know about that.  I have yet to see a salmon shark lying across the lap of someone in a Sea Kayak. ;)

or many other fish for that matter ;D.  If a sea kayak was the best platform for "kayak fishing" more folks, especially those hardcore guys currently catching marlin, salmon sharks, tuna, etc. etc. etc out of SOT's, would surely not keeping fishing off SOT'S if there was something better out there.  I know I wouldn't..

Are they paddling to the location or getting a ride out on a power boat? Have you guys heard of Eskimos and Inuits? They killed walrus, sea lions, whales etc from SEA KAYAKS.

What is my "Ocean Kayak" made for, lakes and rivers only?

They are only good for Caribbean Hotel Tourist Lagoons and should never be taken outside of the marked boundries of such.

and NEVER in any of these conditions:

yeah, and did they paddle to the location or get a ride out in a power boat? did they drive to the beach and paddle 400 yards there and back? did they have a boat full of food/water/camping gear and had to travel 15-20 miles through that crap?

Why are we arguing. SOT's and pedal drives have there place. It would not be my choice for real sea kayaking.

PS- Ocean Kayak is just a brand name. It doesn't mean sh*t. The guy who designed them made them for short trips off the beach in Hawaii. Last I checked, the PNW aint Hawaii.

PS- those are on the lower side of "moderate ocean conditions" half of the pictures they are wearing shorts and t-shirts.

Are the guys paddling their SOT's from Ketchikan to Foggy Bay? or are they getting a ride there?????

I guess we did get a ride.

But he just dropped us off and came back a week later.

and I guess those were just moderate moderate conditions. (42o air and 47o water 14' swell, 17 knt winds, and driving rain.)

And we don't claim to be sea kayaker's. We are contemporary kayak fishermen! ;D

Real kayaker's would have burped their drysuit so they would not look like the Michelin Man.
No Hobies there baby! (Although I wish they were ::) ) And just as a smart ass closing remark; Tim Niemier (the guy who invented the Ocean Kayak brand boat) was in Malibu and he used it for diving.

What difference does it make?  In the interest of time, we get a ride there.  But while there we'll easily paddle 30 miles during the week, sometimes in challenging conditions.  BTW, we're flying up to Ketchikan too ... are you saying real paddlers will launch from their backyards and paddle to where they want to be?  I think not.

Let's face it, if we were looking to be in the optimal watercraft for open water conditions, we'd surely NOT be in a kayak.  Not sure what your point is.

My point was, the hobie mirage drive is sweet, and I wanted everyone, especially Zee, to hear me say it.

OMG!  Are we really having this arguement again?   :spittake:

That's it!  Everyone just whip em out and lay em on the table.  We'll have some non-partisan chick come in and measure them.

Sheesh!
