So after years of trying to get my wife to fish, she popped the question " Can we get me a fishing licence?"  :o and i said....... YES! ha we went to fish lake (OR) where i have been doing pretty good, she always comes but never fishes. I think after catching them today shes hooked. Fun day on the water, and fish on the BBQ.

Hey James wish I could get my wife out fishing. She will not get into my 22' boat let alone a kayak. :'( Been doing a lot of farm work so I haven't been up to Applegate since we went last time. Good looking trout your wife got.

Being out on the water is good enough. Who cares about fishing?
You're a lucky man.

Yea we've been having alot of fun with our T13's. By far the best investment we have made in a long time. We always have something to go do now, Yakin. Once i get the big blue figured out, I'm hoping she will want to go some day. Her current take is that once you get into the ocean you become part of the food chain?? ha. I wont be picky its fun fishin on the lakes.

Hope she doesn't read this...

you can talk about Sharks all you want, don't bother me. I watched Expedition Great White last night and went out in the ocean today, by myself.

Shark encounters..you mean like the one's where your not actually trying to catch them, like Pole?

Not I yet...
See ya on the water..

AH! The Man in the grey suit is who you are referring to.
Yes, they are here, not a lot in close though it seems to me.
However, each year there are sightings here in my area.
Last year two of us a great day of fishing in Macklyn Cove, two days later the paper said the Coast Guard had multiple calls about  large sharks in the cove with us. Never saw or heard from them then, but we keep our catch alive if possible, 'till we hit the beach.
On top of the water....not on top of the food chain.

I had a friend in Pacifica hit by one and another eaten further south but they were on surfboards.  I had a close encounter off Monastery Beach in CA while SCUBA one time.  I just flattened out against a rock wall.

Wasn't there a video floating around where a shark took a chunk out of a yak?  Think I saw it here in the last couple months.

Personally, I just don't worry about it or even think about it.  If it happens "I've led a good life" and you can all fight over my yaks, boats and fishing gear.

James you are a lucky man!  My wife won't even think about going on the ocean.  She has gotten sea-sick.  'Course that won't stop me from trying if I can get her near there on a flat day...  Hate to think she's getting old,  I on the other hand will never act my age, I refuse!
Let me tell you about how often I get to go camping, fishing, hiking ect.!!!!  We just got back from Chickahominy Resivor for 4 days last weekend, caught some fish It was a great trip.

When I first started going out in the ocean on a kayak(San Diego) I sometimes had thoughts that kept me up at night about being attacked by a GW.  I just never think about it anymore.  I like what the guy said in the video of the Australian's catching whites from the beach.  He said something to the effect that you know they're out there, you just try not to think about it.  You know there are bad drivers that get on the road everyday.  You know they're out there, you just don't think about it. It seems like every time I tell someone I fish off my kayak in the ocean, the first thing they ask me about is if I'm afraid that a shark is going to attack me.  I feel like asking them if they expect to get in an accident whenever they get on the I-5.  Never do though, obviously.

From the information I've seen on sharks, which are the same documentaries I'm sure most everyone else has seen on the Discovery Channel and what not, I've decided the best way to avoid becoming a snack for the landlord is to mitigate the possibility of triggering one of the many things sharks tune in to to identify their prey.  For example, never drag fish in the ocean or bleed fish on your kayak.  I've made the decision that I would have to bleed a halibut for a few minutes while it's in the water, but after I'm done bleeding it, I'm moving!  Also, avoid making too much splashing.  Additionally, I don't want to be fishing too close to an island full of sea lions or seals.  This seems to me to be like making yourself the slowest food source in the area.  I'm not saying you shouldn't ever be concerned about sharks.  This is the main reason I have my dive knife mounted on my life vest so I can easily grab it with either hand.

My better half still is nervous of the fact that I'm going out to the ocean to fish and she herself is extremely nervous about the idea of sharks.  Over time though, she's seen that I come back alive, not bleeding, every time, and do not mention seeing any sings of sharks.  Do I mention to her about whatever recent post on ifish about a GW sighting at (fill in the blank here with Oregon coast town)?  NO.  She seems to have let her guard down about the issue little by little over time.  And recently, she was willing to come out in the ocean with me on a kayak.

I would say that you may be able to get her out there eventually. It just take some time and a conscious effort on your part. You are a lucky man though!  How far you've got her right now is more than most dudes could EVER ask for!  Good luck!

Chances of being attacked by a shark are extremely rare. You are far more likely to get in an accident driving to the beach.
I've been in the water with sharks plenty of times; surfing, shooting photos and movies from the water, diving and kayaking. I used to go out kayak fishing in the dark and seen sharks and other large animals every time out. Once, while I was making bait under a pier with lights in the dark; a great white swam right under my kayak. I was kind of afraid, but what are you going to do? I was actually more fascinated than fearful. Another time, surfing in Mexico, we were in the lineup and noticed a school of hammerhead sharks between us and the beach. That was a little sketchy. The main thing to remember is humans are not in the shark's diet unless you stick your hand in it's mouth. The reason surfers get attacked all the time is because they look like seals when they are silhouetted against the sky. Even in those cases, the shark bites the surfer, realizes it's not a seal and swims away. Unfortunately, a single shark bite can do some serious damage.
You shouldn't be afraid of the ocean, but you should be very, very respectful of what can happen to you. Let your wife work her way up to heading out into the ocean. There is plenty more to worry about than sharks; waves, wind, riptides, etc. are the things you need to learn to deal with. Bottom line is we are land creatures, it can be a fine line.......

Ive always viewed sharks as Mean Bears in the woods, there out there but normally leave you alone. unless you got something they want or its just the one curious bear. Never been in the ocean on a kayak yet, but really want to! I think over time my wife will eventually want to go in the ocean some day, but I'm not going to push it. I'm happy fishing the lakes. I'm hoping some day this summer (If it ever comes) ill have some ugly looking ocean fish to post on here.
