Hey everyone, I'm thinking about taking my kayak's versatile functions a step beyond and want to start duck hunting from it in the fall. Only problem is, my OK yak is bright orange and though it's great for identifying me from a huge distance, it's not so great for poppin' quackers.

I've been thinking about painting it a type of camouflage, but am ignorant about what kind of paint to use.

Any thoughts?

dupont makes a new paint specifically for plastics, called Fusion. even has colors that are "flat"

sure you dont want to try and wrap it with a camo graphic, or throw a cloth camo cover over top of it??

Interesting....wrap-able camo graphic?  Where do I find something like that?  Is it a type of decal, or some sort of cloth-like material?

Thanks for the suggestions!   If there's anything else you can think of, let me know!

Use it as an excuse to buy another one >:D.  If not, I second WR's suggestion.  I have a little 12 foot jon boat I painted camo. I used those paints (or something similar??) over epoxy (plastic) and the boat has been outside since 2004.

Where do you do your duck hunting?  I haven't gone for years, mostly because I am semi- new to the area and haven't had much time to get out and scout around.

I grew up in an area where, before I had a driver's license, me and a buddy would grab our shotguns and ride our bikes out of town to hunt ducks, geese, partridge, etc.  Everything was within a mile or two.  Now, other than waking up and waiting in line at a refuge, I have no idea where to go.   I used to hunt way more than I fished.  Fishing was just something I did while waiting for the next hunting season.  Now I fish way more than I hunt.

I was going to hunt from mine last year before I found out I was going to spend 5 months in Kuwait. Though my yak is grey, I was thinking just cover up with a grass mat, and blind material. I wouldn't think it too hard to cover (unless you want to paint her)

yakky,
the wraps i'm talking about you can usually find stretched around cars, pickups and busses. normally they're used as advertising vehicles. but, if you can find one of those graphics companies near you, they should be able to do a matte camo pattern for your boat. not saying it will be cheap, tho.

also look at the big box online retailers . they should have some sort of camo screening cover for small boats that you might be able to adapt down to yak size. mostly they'd be for jon boats and such.

used to bird hunt a lot. pheasant, quail, chukar, partridge etc, but never for ducks geese. something about getting up at midnight and freezing my num nums off in knee deep water in the beginning of winter just never appealed to me.

There is good field hunting for Canada Geese in eastern WA around Tri-Cities.  I did a trip there with a guide service in January 2008, Pacific Wings.  We got a lot of birds, ducks and geese, met some interesting folks and had an interesting time.  Even though it was cold we stayed dry and warm.  My bud and I got some snickers when we showed up with our little 20 gauge over/under upland field guns and offbrand shot, but the snickers stopped when we out shot the others with their semis and high-tech shells.  Still, not quite the same as wandering around the basalt and sage with a dog after chukar, but it was interesting.

If you have an OK, the Krylon Fusion paint works marginally in my experience; any impact to it will scratch it off.  I wouldn't bother getting an actual camo "wrap" decal like Richard suggested or spray painting if you're just looking to have it be a seasonal thing.  Sevylor makes a camo "skirt" for their inflatables that think could be adapted to work for our yaks- you'll paddle much slower, but stealth rules over speed when hunting anyway.

You could probably make one better suited to your specific yak for less that would fit better.  If I were to do it I'd go to the fabric store and find your preferred break-up pattern  in nylon and sew in an elastic draw cord along the top and bottom.  You could either sew it into a donut shape or put hook & loop material on the ends swo that you could wrap it.  Use extra material to make a skirt or use the grass matt for the deck areas.

@craig, I used to do my duck hunting (as a kid) when I'd visit friends out in Scappoose. I remember it being a bunch of fun, and now that that I'm an aspiring kayak fisherman, I thought duck hunting would be appropriate.

I think I'm going to go with the krylon paint, flaws and all. Just figured I'd do it all at once and not have something I have to bring along ( or forget  :embarassed: )

Thanks for the ideas, folks!

Ya'll are thinking too close to off the shelf, or permanent change.  Think lycra!

Visit your local fabric store and see if you can get them to order in some camo lycra (swimsuit material).   Then find a handy lady (or gent) with a sewing machine to sew you up a stretchy custom fit cover that also allows water to flow through it (scuppers).  I'd suggest a full bottom wrap with a center seam.  This wraps up and over the side rails.  Then have velcro attached top sections to cover the tank well, yet give you access.  Use the rod holder mounts to support the blinds, and such. Relatively cheap, and extremely light.

True dat!  Down at Sunset Beach SP this, I caught out of my side vision some older white haired dude, pale as a ghost and probably pushing 250lbs, sporting a lime green/chartruse dong thong.   That is something that cannot be UNSEEN.  :tard:
