Good point - I'll get us back on track here.  I'll start another thread about the VW when I know more.  I take possession today.

Jason - let me know how you do out there near Jones.

I went out Saturday and was surprised to find the Lummi Ferry is still in operation (I thought it had a hole in it and was out of svc).  So I ditched the Pt. Migley idea and went out to Clark to do some cab and greenling fishing (and C&R ling fishing, which IS legal - I checked with WDFW), and Pt Lawrence area for Salmon.

The Clark part went well.  Got a few lings, one woulda been legal size if I could retain, but still fun to catch.  The prize was the 22" cab:

Very fun to catch.  I love when they dive straight down and zip out drag.  Around high tide I headed out to Pt Lawrence area.  The place was swarmed with baitfish - I could see them in the shallow water and they clogged up my depthfinder view at a variety of depths.  So I imagine this is a very good place for salmon.  Unfortunately just as I hit the point, disaster struck:

You paddlers will probably say "so what - use your paddle" which I did...but I just love that mirage drive.  For me, kayaking without it is like driving an automatic when you're used to driving a stick - my feet just instinctively kept searching for the pedals.  Anyway, I was super bummed about it.  I did end up mooching out there for a couple of hours but came up with only dogfish.  So, skunked on the salmon yet again!

I was in Seattle yesterday and stopped by Hobie Cat Northwest.  The guy had the parts there for the Mirage drive, so we got it fixed up.  It was likely cracked from hitting rocks some previous trip, and broke completely loose when I started hammering on it to get out of a current.

Nice cabbie!  It'll be nice to get home and re-visit the local sites.  I miss Boundary Bay Brewery and the late night scene on Thirsty Thursday.

You make a good distinction between targeting and cnr of lings.  It's true that you cannot control your bycatch, and the rule in general is that if you are targeting a legal species, you must release any species you catch that is out of season or restricted.  So cabezon fishing it is!

Very nicely done, sorry to hear about the fin incident.  I've picked up a replacement set of turbos for my boat before I headed north, cause mine were hammered, and I went for the entire turbo fin kit.  It's nice to have the extra old fins and parts hanging out - I leave them in the boat.

Thanks for the report TTM. You've got a way with finding those fatty Cabbies! Unreal about snapping a drive mast. I've seen 'em bent I haven't seen 'em snap. Glad to hear HCNW took care of you. Dan and Kevin know their Hobies and have lots of parts on hand.

Excellent idea.  I think I'm going to do the same.  Would have been good to have some backup in this instance.

Thanks for the report TTM. You've got a way with finding those fatty Cabbies!

Haha - yeah.  I've fished Clark Island *alot* this year and I found a hole that is uncanny in its abundance of very large cabs.  Literally every time I've fished it I haul one out of there about that size.  Good times.  How did you do out in Elliot Bay on Saturday Zee?

Nice Cabby.  What color was the meat?

This one had white flesh.  I haven't been keeping many cabs because they are a pain to filet (probably mine, not the fish's fault), and that line of heavy pinbones that goes down the middle of the filet to the tail.  But madoc may have converted me to a cab-keeper at the ORC.

Ebay had some good marks before the tide came in but no nets flying that I saw. I'm gonna have to go visit you and your cabby spot. ;)
