Ok I did it. I made the commitment to come!! I’m very excited about attending, although I must admit that it is a bit intimidating. My learning curve compared to most of you guys is small. As Spot stated that this would be a great opportunity for me to improve that curve and I completely agree! Thanks for the push Spot.

I have be reading and doing some home work but I do have a few questions for you guys I want to be as prepared as possible.

1)   Will I need to bring my dry suit or will it be to hot for that?
2)   What size bait should I buy red or green label? I plan on curing them is it a good idea to pre-cut them before curing?
3)   Do the hooks barbs need to be flattened?
4)   The Reg’s are a bit confusing what is the size, type and amount of salmon can be taken in this area?
5)   What is the address of the launch site and weigh in?
6)   What channel for the VHF?
7)   Is a wide meshed net ok? Standard cheap type?
8)   What time are most of you plain on being there?
9)   Do I need a flasher or diving sinker “Deep Six” I know it’s going to be pretty shallow?

Here’s the rigging I plan on bringing.

   Prettied Mooching hooks 3/0 hook with four finger spacing 30lb test 4 ½ in length.
   4, 5 and 6 ounce cannonball weights.
   Sliding swivels.
   U-20, Quick fish, Wiggle Wart, Coyote 3.0 and Brads Supper Bait lures.
   Beads.
   Spreader bars with swivels.
   Extra hooks 3/0.

I’m I missing anything?

Ok I know it’s a lot of questions but I want to catch a salmon!!!

Thanks Guys.

Chuck

If you wanted to show up at our thursday night meet up/fish extravaganza at Sport Craft boat launch in OC I'm sure Spot or myself would be happy to help folks with advancing along the learning curve.

If you are planning on staying inside youngs bay or are even planning on heading out in to the mainstem of the columbia I would stick to trolling spinners and leave a lot of the other stuff at home.  No need for flat/qwik fish or wiggle warts.  If you do plan on fishing herring don't precut them, and green labels are what you would want.  Barbed hooks are fine...

I would suggest dressing for the water so i woudl say i would bring it and you determine if you want to wear it when you get there.

5)   What is the address of the launch site and weigh in?

go into forum and events and look for this . and it should give you all you need.
NWKA Fall Salmon Challenge Tourney HQ, Release forms, & Launch locations

6)   What channel for the VHF?

as NWKA we usually run channel 69.. but i think the marine channel is 16

So to help Swiftdraw out (and me!) - would something like a bluefox work good?  And considering the depth - maybe unweighted?

Blue fox spinners seem to work for everything so I wouldn't say not to use them, however that is not the type of spinner used traditionally for fall salmon.  Larger bladed unweighted spinners fished off a threeway swivel with 1-3 oz of weight is more the norm for shallow tidewater salmon trolling.  If you were to do a search on Ifish.net for Bouy ten spinners or Tillamook bay spinners you would get some great examples.  You would also see which color patterns seem to appear over and over and those might be the ones you would want to fish.

As a side note, brads superbait cutplugs have been putting fish in the box over the last couple days, and would also be a decent option of yak trolling.

Good question, haven't really thought about it,Just bring some meat for the barby and a side to share. Does 7pm sound like a good time for dinner?

we could use plates,forks/knives/spoons, paper towels. I'm gonna bring the BBQ,briquets.BBQ tools.

Blue fox would work ok but i would put it behind a flasher and a little weight, a spinner by itself will just be a junk(smugula,as Ralph cals it) grabber . I'm using brads cut plug behind a dees flasher with a 12 inch dropper to 1-2 ounce cannonball. I don't know the area so may use more weight if there is stronger current.
See ya on the water..

So, my mom will be coming with me - she has a good camera, and knows how to use it.  She'll probably want to wander around a bit, but I'm sure we could corral her into taking catch and weigh in photos.

Thanks to all of you for the tips and answers to the many questions that I had :)
Spot your spot on with starting that post I now have much more confidence!!
I'll be arriving around 6:30 Friday!
Will I be able to fill out the form at pier 39 at this time?
I'll most likely be getting a hotel due to the fact of me dragging my behind on deciding to attend.

Thanks again

Chuck
