i was looking at some old spots i have caught halibut west of the lighthouse. they are right on the 40fathom line, about nine miles out. so i got to thinking why not launch at quarry cove at yaqiuna head? so i called blm and they said not a problem. i assured them i would not disturb the birds or seals. you can get in at 6:00am but there is an electric gate at the parking lot that you cant access until 8:00am.
i thought this would be a good alternative to the hassle at the the boat launch. turns out i don't think i can make it out sat. but if you guys are interested check it out.

2mph? i thought those hobies were supposed to be fast.

Not planning on going 9 miles out and some Hobies are fast, not Outbacks, and i said a "leisurly pace" . I could crank out 3.5 MPH for an hour but would be sweatin it.. can get it over 4 for a short while, remember an outback is a tank...

My record is just a hair under 6mph flat out in my t13.  But you'd never catch me paddling 9 miles out to sea on the ocean lol.  3mph is a good average clip and 9 miles isn't bad for a day on a lake but ugh not on the ocean.

Yea, there's a huge difference between 9 miles on a lake and 9 miles on the ocean, that's for sure.

I figure out 2+ miles there's a chance of catching a Hali at least, and if nothing else probably hook into a good ling or something

Hell last year 24togo and I were fishing just off of Three Arches not a mile from shore in a 80-90ft hole and he pulled up that monster cabi and a 40+ inch halibut.  Unfortunately the season closed 2 days earlier and it was too big to hide in the hull ;-p  You don't have to go far you just gotta be lucky.

That just brought up a lot of un-dealt with emotions...  My eyes, they're glistening...

It's ok for a guy to shed a tear if:
- you're kicked in the nuts
- you lose a big fish
- your dog dies
- your wife leaves you and takes all the beer
- your favorite hat disintegrates from wear
-
-
-

I can't think of any other reasons

I just bought bait, I'd like in on this one. Anybody want to launch a little earlier? Some of the other boards I've browsed said whatever/what little action they had came early. We can all hook up on Ch. 69 on the outside.

It looks like things are shaping up in Newport again such that this weekend will probably be the only weekend for the season. Loads and loads of boats going out.

So make it count.

yea, with that much pressure i imagine 28,765 LBS. could go quick. Hope were part of that...I'm curious how close to that number without being over would warrant another two days?

Cool, we need to figure out some coordinates to meet at sorta SW a little, about 2 miles out in case you do launch earlier, not by yourself though.. Do you have GPS? hopefully we all have one or at least two out there. Don't forget a flag, horn,VHF for leaving/entering the harbor. I'm working on a Butt gaff, in case we do get a barn door we can land it safely...uhhh, safeleyer, mean... :banjo:

I'm bringing two gps units, a 36" gaff, and a bad-ass bonker. Thought about a firearm, but that's going too far for most of our chickens. No clue about what lat/lon would be a good place to meet up. I don't have a FF so the bottom is a mystery until my lead hits it.

My vhf has DSC. We need to start a database of NWKA MMSI numbers, so we can preprogram those digits.

Looking forward to fishing w/you Roy!

Yaknitup are you coming?

I'm going to swing by Uwajimaya and see if I can't pick up a few salmon bellies then head to the coast before Hwy 18 gets too constipated.

I don't know, gotta be at least 135 -140lbs whata beauty  :-*
Where was that caught Pole?
