I'm sitting here stewing about not one of us catching a butt..... :(

If there is another two days of season i gotta go out again. Probably will stop at Depoe Bay on the way up to Young's Bay and fish friday way early this time, right at first light, conditions permitting.

Anyone?..

I'd be surprised if we get any more days :-\  But I sure hope they do...

Just hoping it was bad for everyone..Guess we will find out about wednesday.
See ya on the water..

I re-froze my bait. I'd much rather go drown it, then watch it slowly freezer burn waiting for crabbing to heat up.  ;D

But then again I'm not going to get my hopes up, TWC's report said they limited their boat at "the ranch" with 16 fish total. The charters out of Newport probably same story.

I'll try it again under paddle power given the chance by ODFW and similar conditions, and...I know it dicks your AOTY points, but for the thrill of cranking one up I think we might need a mothership at some point.

HALIBUT FISHING

Lots of fishers turned out for an all-depth halibut opening last weekend and were successful. While not all the numbers are in yet, fishery managers suspect the remaining quota was taken and there will not be another all-depth opening this year. A final decision will be made later this week.

See ya on the water..

What we need to lobby for is a "catch share" type of deal, since conditions have to be pretty damn nice for us to get out far enough. I feel like it would be fair to be allowed to fish odd & even weekends during the season from a yak. Would double are chances at finding an operable weather window. I highly doubt even with that advantage that a yakker could tag 6 fish in a year at one per day, barring mothership assistance. If there were that many fish nearshore the PB's would mark them and boat them before us. I kind of doubt that ODFW & PFMC are willing to start making special rules for us though. If only I were king  :P

Here's are chance to to be heard, like I said, doubt if we get any special concessions, but we should let them know we are a small but growing contingent. (article coutesy of The Siuslaw News) We should figure out what we want and take a position. It couldn't hurt.  :-\

ODFW invites input for halibut season

Anglers get a say in the 2011 sport halibut fishery structure.

Sport anglers who target Pacific halibut have an opportunity to help shape the 2011 halibut season by participating in a meeting in Newport or comment by phone or email.

“This meeting is an opportunity for anglers to have a say in what the 2011 Pacific halibut season looks like off Oregon,” said Lynn Mattes, sport halibut project leader for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. “At this meeting we will discuss the sport fishery structure, such as days open and season timing, for the three sub-areas off Oregon (Columbia River, Central Coast and South Coast). We will review allocation issues and the overall Catch Sharing Plan for Pacific halibut fisheries off the Pacific northwest.”

The meeting will be 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Holiday Inn Express (south of the bridge), 135 SE 32nd, Newport.

I don't support kayak specific regulations.  And yes, it could hurt.  I'm a fisherman first and a kayak is a means to an end for me.  Why should I be treated any differently than other recreational fishermen?  Unite us, don't divide us.

I've got to say, I'm with Allen on this.  Given the well organized forces working to take away our ocean fishing opportunities, the last thing we need is to create more divisions in the ranks of sport fishermen.

I dropped the ball this year when I didn't pounce on those good days and focus on Halibut.  I targeted bottom fish thinking there would be more good days ahead, but the rough/windy conditions in the first part of the summer said no to that plan.
The inside 40 fathom season is more than generous as far as opportunities, even for us yakers, hard to beat 7 days a week.  I don't think we are entitled to special regs just because we fish from smaller craft.  If someone wants to lobby the powers that be for something, lobby for a larger quota that will allow all fishermen regardless of chosen craft more time on the water.  In particular a larger quota for the inside 40 fathom fishery.
