Hi all,

I'm in the market for a used rod for yak fishing. I'll be after salmon, ling cod, rock the usual.
Size, line weight, make, model...

What rod is the best for the $. I'm tight on $ so i'd appreciate the help!

I should mention I've owned for years the following 2 rods:

A uglystick spl 1100 6'6'' medium 6-15
and a (2x4of a rod) Shakespeare sturdy stick 6'6'' 20-40

Thanks,
Ben

If things are tight, and even if they are not, there is an ugly stik that will do the job.

Would you be willing to elaborate as to what model of the ugly stick you'd recommend...

Thanks,

Ben

No rod is going to be able to do all well. Something that might be decent middle ground would be about 8'6" length, 20-50# line rating, can handle 2-5 oz. of weight w/ a moderate-fast action tip and medium-heavy power.

Actually, if you are on a tight budget I'd recommend a Diawa Wilderness Salmon/Steelhead rod.  You can pick them up brand new in the neighborhood of $15 at Outdoor Emporium/SportCo.  I've used it for Rock and Ling Cod and its works fairly well so long as you don't use more than 2.5 or 3oz. jigs.  Sure its no Trevala, but it gets the job done.

Good call. I've never tried one out but they are always trying to get rid of those thing at OE. This model seems decent but I see what you're talking about not using too heavy of a jig as it's only rated to 1.5 oz..

It would be great for rockfish but not so hot for salmon. I think your recommendation is better.

BTW if you can get the scratch together about $70 Berkley AIR IM8 7'9" 15-50 (A92-7-9HB) or 8'6" 15-50 (A92-8-6XH) are a great value. They are probably the best all around NW rod for the price IMO.

Both 2ndflooryak, and Lee bought the lite in an 8'6 MH salmon spinning rod, and are really happy with them. You might have a hard time wrestling a large ling or cabbe out of the rocks with it, but should handle all the other culprits nicely. The extra length would be nice for reaching around your bow too. I personally prefer something in a 7' MH casting for most saltwater yak applications. My typical S/W gear consist of one Berkley in a jigging action I use when bouncing PW darts, or big curly tail jigs. I have a 8'6 MH Lamiglass with a lighter tip for mooching, and trolling with my DR, and one ugly stick intercoastal in a 7' MH spinning that I adore. It's my goto flounder stick, and the rod I landed my 34" tiger musky on. I think you typically loose a little sensitivity with most of the Ugly Sticks, but they are super durable and one of the best values on the market. I plan to pick up another one in the Big Water series for halibut and Sturgeon.

Don't know if this was helpful, or more confusing.
