any thoughts on fishing plastics for salmon (http://www.berkley-fishing.com/cat.php?k=74883&sk=74853)?

it's common in the east but other than the pink worm for steelhead, I've rarely seen anybody using it out west.

Most of the typical baits used now are made of plastic. Plastic baits are definitely attracting fishes. They add scents and glitters so that fishes are tempted to bite the plastic bait.

Not sure that many people have successfully caught salmon on plastics other than hoochies, or other squid. We slay bottom and rockfish on them though. I love Gulp!! plastics. I swore by them back in FL, and they have proven to catch everything but salmon here for me here.

Been wondering if Berkley will ever wise up and come out with a GULP!! anchovie, herring, sardine, etc thats precut for the style of fishing done here for salmon...

still gonna try their other fishy type salt water baits and see how those work....

Yeah...those will be a cheap option over what is already being used.  I can just see it already....a 6 pack of Gulp! Alive cut plugs for $17.99.

In the mean time, why not marinate your chovies, herring, and sardines in some Gulp! Alive magic juice?

We catch salmon on plastic swimbaits up in Alaska.  We catch salmon on Gitzit Tubes in California.  It can be done, it does get done, it works!

While the plastics used are plain vanilla in nature.  Why does a blue/chart swimbait catch salmon?  Why does a white tube bait catch salmon?

I see no reason why some of the more "fancy" ones wouldn't work.

I would love to fish a soft plastic cut plug!  No thaw time, no cure time, no regular checks to see if your bait has mushroomed.  It's time.  Just look at how popular Brad's hard plastic cut plugs became in their 1st year on the market.

I've made a change and became a real bait thug last year. Looks like bait, smells like bait, feels like bait, it is bait!! Artificials always make me feel like I may be better off to add more scent, try a different color, size up/down etc.. It's real easy to overthink when you've got so many options.

Spot, Baitrix makes those.

Yeah, I don't know about the "Looks like bait" part.  Where's the reflectivity? Close though.   :)

You're really going to have to read that post more carefully. ;)

Well, I just bought a couple of packs of those from baitrix via this interwebs thing.  If they show up before the end of my salmon fishing season, I'll give them a try.

Hay Zee----are you jigging your herring?  The little Gamakatsu herring jigs really work, and jigged bait is the real deal----slimier, shinier, and all-round best at catching fish.

When they're around I do. I agree that fresh herring look almost nothing like frozen. The color and shinyness is incomparable.

They do have some.  I have a pack.  They haven't really worked out for being used yet though.
